Stoinis efforts in vain
Despite Marcus Stoinis brilliant effort with the bat, New
Zealand defeated Australia by 6 runs in the first One day international at Eden
Park, Auckland earlier today. It was an exciting match with both teams looking
to secure the lead in 3 match series.
Australia won the toss and elected to field. New Zealand got
off to a worse start losing an early wicket of Tom Latham at the score of 13. At
the end of first 10 overs the hosts were 62 for 1. The second partnership
between Martin Guptil and Kane Williamson put on 74 runs for the second wicket.
New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals and were struggling at 134 for 5
in 26th over. At the end of
30 overs, New Zealand was 167 for 5. Jimmy Neesham and Neil Broom rescued the
New Zealand innings putting on 76 runs for the sixth wicket. Neil Broom scored his half century in 56
balls. New Zealand scored 286 for 9 in 50 overs. Marcus Stoinis was the pick of
bowlers taking 3 for 49.
Chasing 287, Australia lost 3 early wickets of Aaron Finch, Head
and Handscomb in the first 7 overs. In the first overs Australia was 45 for 3.
Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell were too dismissed cheaply to leave the
visitors at 54 for 5. Australia was struggling at 114 for 6. Marcus Stoinis
with James Faulkner put on 81 runs for the 7th wicket. Stoinis
showed his class with the bat scoring his half century in 64 balls. With
wickets falling at the other end, Stoinis completed his century. With only
Hazlewood at the crease, Stoinis played remarkable shots and almost helped
Australia register an incredible win from a hopeless situation. Stoinis
remained not out on 146.
