Sudirman Cup 2017: India enters into knockout stages

After 2011, the Indian badminton team reached the knockout stages of the prestigious Sudirman Cup 2017 held in Gold Coast, Australia. India played 2 matches losing to Denmark 1-4 and then outplaying Indonesia in the second match by the same margin. Despite Indonesia winning their match against Denmark by 3-2, the number of points mattered as the Indian team as they have 5 matches won and 5 lost. Denmark has occupied the first spot with 6 wins and 4 losses. The Indian produced brilliant performances in the first match despite losing to Denmark 1-4. The mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Satwik Reddy almost gave a scare to the Olympic medalist in Rio.

PV Sindhu has been in good form beating both opponents with ease while Ajay Jayaram lost his match and K Srikanth dominated the Indonesian opponent. In women's doubles, Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy almost gave a scare to the silver medalist at Rio Olympics of Christina Pedersen and Juhl in three sets. Then they defeated the Indonesian pair in straight games to win the tie 4-1. India lost both the men's doubles to two top quality pairing in the world.

It was a great day for Indian badminton to see such upswing for Indian doubles pairing especially in mixed doubles and women's doubles. India will play China on 26th May while Malaysia will take on Japan, Chinese Taipei against Korea and final quarter-finals will see Thailand take on Denmark.

Indian team has a big task against the defending Champions and has to play out of their skins to defeat the Chinese team.
