Australia register an emphatic 251 runs win to take a 1-0 lead

Australia registered a remarkable 251 runs in the fifth and the final day of the first Test match played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Monday.

Starting on the overnight score of 13 for 0, it was not a perfect start for England as they lost an early wicket of Rory Burns for 11. Jason Roy and Joe Root survived anxious moments before playing some lovely strokes. It was a poor display of stroke play by Jason Roy who played a bad stroke against Nathan Lyon and was dismissed for 28. Root and Roy added 41 runs for the 2nd wicket. Lyon was superb with his line and length to trouble the England batsmen. He took wickets of Joe Denly and England captain Joe Root to leave hosts in tatters at 85 for 4. It was a brilliant bowling display by the Australian bowlers who did not allow England batsmen to score runs with ease. The hosts went into lunch in big trouble at 85 for 4.

In the first over after lunch, Pat Cummins bowled Jos Buttler cheaply for 1. Cummins and Lyon created so much pressure on England batsmen. Cummins got the wicket of Jonny Bairstow to leave England on the brink of defeat. Lyon dismissed Ben Stokes with beauty to have the hosts at 97 for 7.
Chris Woakes played with positive intent and tried to put pressure on Australian bowlers. Lyon dismissed Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad. Pat Cummins dismissed Chris Woakes for 37 to bowl out England for 146. Australia won the first Test by a massive 251 run gap. Lyon took 6 wickets while Pat Cummins did the damage taking 4 wickets.

It was a remarkable comeback by the Australian team after being reduced to 122 for 8 on the first day. Steve Smith proved his worth why he is the best Test batsmen in the world scoring 144 runs in the 1st innings and 142 in the 2nd innings.

Australia 284 in 80.4 overs (Steve Smith 144, Peter Siddle 44, Stuart Broad 5/86, Chris Woakes 3/58) and 487 for 7 d in 112 overs ( Steve Smith 142, Matthew Wade 110, Ben Stokes 3/85) beat England 374 in 135.5 overs ( Rory Burns 133, Ben Stokes 50, Nathan Lyon 3/112, Pat Cummins 3/84) and 146 in 52.3 overs ( Chris Woakes 37, Root 28, Lyon 6/49, Pat Cummins 4/32) by 251 runs.
