BWF World Championship 2019 Day 1: Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth and HS Prannoy move into 2nd round


It was a great start for the Indian shuttlers as Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth and HS Prannoy moved into the 2nd round of the BWF World Championship 2019 played at Basel, Switzerland on Monday.
Sai Praneeth defeated Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada in two straight games 21-17, 21-16 to move into the 2nd round. Both players took alternate points till 5-5 before Sai Praneeth played aggressive badminton to take an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, the young Canadian player showed his talent and took 5 points in succession to reduce the gap only to 2 points. Sai showed experience and won 1st set at 21-17.

In the 2nd game also, Sai Praneeth committed errors which the opponent took advantage of. Sai led 11-9 at the interval. The Indian dominated after the break and won 2nd set at 21-16.
HS Prannoy defeated Eetu Heino of Finland in three games by 17-21, 21-10, 21-11 to move into the 2nd round. The Indian struggled in the 1st game and trailed 9-11 at the interval. After the interval, Prannoy lost the 1st game at 17-21.

Prannoy dominated his opponent in the next two games and never allowed Heino to play his natural game. The Indian led 11-5 at the interval. He continued to show his class and won the 2nd set at 21-10.
In the third and final set, Prannoy continued his domination and made life tough for his opponent to win the game at 21-11 to move into 2nd round.

India’s leading men’s singles player Kidambi Srikanth beat Nguyen of Ireland in three sets at 17-21, 21-16, 21-6. It was a dominating start by the Indian who played with aggression and took a 13-7 lead. Nguyen fought back strongly to level scores at 16-16 and won the 1st game at 21-17.

The second game also saw Nguyen play with aggression and trouble the Indian. After trailing down, Srikanth showed his aggression and took the lead to win 2nd set at 21-16. It was a dominating performance by the Indian in the third set who showed his class and took an 11-1 lead at the interval. After the interval, Srikanth won the match easily by 21-6 to move into 2nd round.

The women’s doubles pair of Meghana Jakkampudi and S Poorvisha Ram defeated Diana Corleto Soto and Alejandra in two straight sets by 21-10, 21-18 to move into the 2nd round.
PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will play their 2nd round matches tomorrow as they received byes in 1st round.
