BWF World Championships 2019: PV Sindhu, Saina and Srikanth move into 3rd round
The top Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and Kidambi
Srikanth moved into the round of 16 of BWF World Championships 2019 played at
Basel, Switzerland on Wednesday.
The 2-time World Championship silver medalists PV Sindhu had
no problems of defeating Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei in two straight sets by
21-14, 21-15 to move into the round of 16. Sindhu who took time to settle played
with aggressive intent and put pressure on Pai Yu Po. The Indian then took
control and won the first set at 21-14.
In the 2nd game, Sindhu started on an aggressive
note-taking a 6-1 lead. The Indian made mistakes which helped Pai equal the
scores at 10-10 and went into 11-10 lead at the interval. After the break,
Sindhu showed his class and stream rolled his opponent to win the 2nd
set at 21-15. She will take on Biewen Zhang of USA in the pre-quarters on Thursday.
After some injury problems, Saina Nehwal defeated the Netherlands
Soraya De Visch in two straight sets by 21-10, 21-11 to move into the round of 16.
The Indian showed his class and looked good with his drop shots and placements.
She will take on Mia Blichafiedlt of Denmark.
Kidambi Srikanth struggled before winning the match against
Israel Misha Zilberman in three sets by 13-21, 21-13, 21-16 to move into the round
of 16. In the first game, both players took alternate points before the Indian
committed errors. Misha took advantage to win the first set easily at 21-13.
The second game saw Kidambi Srikanth come back with aggressive shots and
placements to win the 2nd set at 21-13.
In the third and deciding game, Srikanth had a great start
to the game dominating his opponent taking an 11-4 lead. After the interval,
Misha tried his best to come back, but the Indian won the 3rd game
at 21-16. He will take on Kantaphon Wangchareon of Thailand in the pre-quarters
today.
The men’s doubles of Sumeeth Reddy and Manu Attri were
knocked out in the 2nd round with a straight loss to Hang Chang Kai
and Zhou Hao Dong of China by 16-21, 19-21. Despite the Indian pair having the
lead, they were not able to take the advantage and lost the match.
The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy
lost to Du Yue and Li Yun Hui in two straight sets by 20-22, 16-21. Despite the
Indian fighting, Ashwini Ponnappa, and Sikki Reddy could not take advantage and
lost the match in two straight sets.
