New Zealand versus Sri Lanka 1st 4th day: Sri Lanka inching towards a win at end of day 4
The Sri Lankan Cricket Team are inching towards a win at the
end of 4th day of the first Test match against New Zealand at Galle
International Stadium, Galle on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 195 for 7, BJ Watling and
Somerville started the innings on a positive note taking singles and hitting occasional
boundaries making Sri Lankan bowlers frustrate. Lahiru Kumara got the
breakthrough dismissing BJ Watling for 77. Somerville and Watling added 47 runs
for the 8th wicket. Trent Boult joined Somerville and played with
positive intent making life tough for Sri Lankan bowlers. Boult and Somerville
added 36 runs for the 9th wicket. Boult scored 26 off 25 balls. Ajaz
Patel made a valuable contribution putting on 25 runs for the last wicket.
Dhananjaya de Silva got the final wicket dismissing Patel for 14. New Zealand
were bowled out at the score of 285 with a lead of 267 runs and the players
went into the lunch break.
Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimanne started the chase struggling
against the New Zealand spinners. After the initial burst, both openers
steadied innings and made life tough for Kiwis bowlers. Sri Lanka went into tea
break at 76 for 0. New Zealand bowlers created pressure on Sri Lankan openers
but could not pick any wickets.
The third session saw some exciting action with New Zealand
fielders missing chances of dismissing Karunatne. The captain Karunatne led from
the front reaching his half-century off 113 balls. Thirimanne played with
positive intent and put pressure on New Zealand spinners to reach his fifty off
124 balls. Sri Lanka were 133 for 0 with both openers remaining steady. The
umpires decided to call off play due to bad light. The hosts require another 135
runs to win the 1st Test match.
