New Zealand versus Sri Lanka 1st 5th day: Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 6 wickets to win the 1st Test match
The Sri Lanka Cricket Team beat New Zealand by 6 wickets to
register a famous win on the 5th and final of the first Test match
played at Galle International Stadium, Galle on Sunday. By winning this match,
Sri Lanka earned 60 points in the World Test Championships.
Starting on the overnight score of 133 for 0, Dimuth Karunaratne
and Thirimanne started on a positive note putting pressure on New Zealand
bowlers. William Somerville got the breakthrough dismissing Thirimanne for 64.
The Sri Lankan openers laid a strong foundation adding 161 runs. Kusal Mendis
came to the crease and hit 10 runs in 6 balls. Mendis played a bad shot as he
was dismissed by Ajaz Patel.
On the other hand, Dimuth Karunatne continued to play with
solid technique and reached his century off 216 balls. The Sri Lankan captain
showed his class to be finally dismissed for 122 by Tim Southee. Kusal Perera
came to the crease and hit a quickfire 23 off 19 balls. Angelo Mathews and
Dhananjay de Silva took Sri Lanka home by 6 wickets to win the 1st
Test.
It was a good Test match between these teams, but Sri Lanka
held their nerves and took their chances. Dimuth Karunaratne and Thirimanne 161
runs for opening wicket laid the foundation for a famous. The highest run chase
at Galle was 99. For New Zealand, Boult, Somerville, Ajaz Patel, and Tim Southee
took 1 wicket each.

Sri Lanka takes a 1-0 lead in the two-Test match series. Both
teams will move on to P Sara Stadium, Colombo from 22nd Aug.
