New Zealand versus Sri Lanka 1st Test 2nd day: Match hangs in the balance at end of day 2
The 2nd day’s play of the first Test match
between Sri Lanka and New Zealand hangs in the balance with Sri Lanka just 22
runs behind at Galle International Stadium, Galle on Thursday.
Starting on the overnight score of 203 for 5, New Zealand
were dealt a major blow as Ross Taylor was dismissed off the very first ball by Lakmal. Lakmal produced the magic again dismissing Mitchell Santer. Tim
Southee was run out in a misunderstanding. Trent Boult and William Somerville frustrated
the Sri Lankan bowlers adding 27 runs for the 9th wicket. Lakmal got
the breakthrough dismissing Boult and Ajaz Patel to bowl out New Zealand for
249.
In reply, Lahiru Thirimanne and captain Dimuth Karunaratne started
on a steady start adding 27 runs for the opening wicket. Ajaz Patel got the
breakthrough getting Thirimmane. Sri Lanka went into lunch at 34 for 1.
After the lunch break, Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis played
with positive intent putting pressure on New Zealand spinners. Ajaz Patel
dismissed Sri Lankan captain Karunaratne for 39. Kusal Mendis and Angelo
Mathews took the attack on New Zealand spinners especially Somerville. The right-handed
Mendis showed his class and reached his fifty off 88 balls. Ajaz Patel got the
big wicket of Kusal Mendis at the stroke of tea. Sri Lanka went into tea break
at 143 for 3.
Soon after the tea break, Trent Boult dismissed Kusal Perera
cheaply for 1. Ajaz Patel did most of the damage getting Dhanajaya de Silva.
Mathews reached his half-century off 97 balls and soon was dismissed by Ajaz
Patel. Dickwella and Lakmal rescued the Sri Lankan innings with good defense
and attacking stroke play making the New Zealand bowlers struggle. Both added unbeaten 66
runs for the 8th wicket. Sri Lanka ended the 2nd day on
227 for 7. Ajaz Patel was the pick of bowlers for New Zealand with 5 wickets.
Sri Lanka 227 for 7 in 80 overs (Kusal Mendis 53, Mathews
50, Dickwella 39*, Lakmal 28*, Ajaz Patel 5/78) trail New Zealand 249 in 83.2
overs ( Ross Taylor 86, Nicholls 42, Danajaya 5/80, Lakmal 4/29) by 22 runs.
