Neil Wagner 5 wicket haul helps New Zealand beat England by an innings and 65 runs

Thanks to Neil Wagner 5 wicket haul, New Zealand defeated England by an innings and 65 runs on the fifth and final day of the first Test match played at Mount Maunganui on Monday.
Starting on the overnight score of 55 for 3, it was not an ideal start for England as their captain Joe Root went cheaply for 11 runs by Colin de Grandhomme. Ben Stokes and Joe Denly played were solid with their defensive technique. Neil Wagner, Tim Southee, Mitchell Santer kept the runs dry not allowing them to score runs with ease. At the lunch break, England were 98 for 4.
Ben Stokes and Joe Denly started the second session on a cautious note. Tim Southee got the breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing Stokes for 28. Stokes and Denly added 52 runs for the 5th wicket. Wagner was brilliant with his speed and dismissed Joe Denly with a good catch by BJ Watling. He then got the wicket of Ollie Pope with a stunning one-handed catch by Mitchell Santer for 6.

Wagner produced another magical delivery to dismiss Jos Buttler for 0 to leave England at 138 for 8. Jofra Archer and Sam Curran showed some fight with aggressive stroke play. At the tea break, the visitors were 161 for 8.

In the third session, Archer and Sam Curran continued to play good strokes which made the New Zealand bowlers think. The Kiwis team were without their star bowler Trent Boult. Neil Wagner got the wicket of Jofra Archer with a catch by Matt Henry for 30. Archer and Curran added 59 runs for the 9th wicket. Wagner produced a brilliant delivery to dismiss Stuart Broad for 0. New Zealand bowled out England for 197. Neil Wagner was the pick of bowlers with 5 for 44.

New Zealand 615 for 9 in 201 overs (BJ Watling 205, Mitchell Santer 126, Colin de Grandhomme 65, Kane Williamson 51, Ben Stokes 2/37, Sam Curran 3/119, Leach 2/153) beat  England 353 in 124 overs ( Ben Stokes 91, Joe Denly 74, Tim Southee 4/88, Neil Wagner 3/90) and 197 in 96.2 overs  ( Joe Denly 35, Jofra Archer 30, Rory Burns 31, Neil Wagner 5/44, Mitchell Santer 3/53) by an innings and 65 runs.

BJ Watling was awarded the man of the match for his marathon 205 runs innings. New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead in the 2 match Test series. The 2nd Test match will be played at Seddon Park, Hamilton from 29th November.

  The defending Champions India registered a commanding win in the 2 nd semi-finals against South Korea of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played in Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia on 16 th September.   The defending Champions England qualified for the semi-finals with a thrashing of the USA in a must-win game played at Kensington Oval, Barbados on 23 rd June 2024. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and decided to field first. Reece Topley struck in the first over dismissing Andries Gous with a simple catch to Salt.
