Smriti Mandhana brilliance leads India to a series clinching
win in the 3rd and deciding One day international in the ICC Women’s
Championship against West Indies played at Sir Vivan Richards Stadium North
Sound, Antigua on Wednesday.
West Indies captain Stafaine Taylor won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as they lost an early of
Natasha McLean cheaply by Shihka Pandey. The Indian bowlers kept it tight and
did reduced West Indies to 40 for 3 and then 84 for 5. West Indies captain
Taylor led from front taking singles and hitting boundaries. She played with
positive intent and revived the hosts from a bad position. She and Stacy Ann
King added 96 runs for the 6th wicket. As things looked dangerous
for the Indian team, Poonam Yadav got the breakthrough dismissing Taylor for
79. The Indian bowlers did the job and bowled out West Indies for 194 in 50
overs. The experienced Jhulan Goswami and Poonam Yadav took 2 wickets each,
Shikha Pandey, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Deepti Sharma picked 1 wicket each.
Chasing a modest target of 195 runs to win, Smriti Mandhana
making a comeback in the Indian ODI squad after an injury looked impressive
with her stroke play along with Jemimah Rodrigues. Mandhana took the attack to
West Indies bowlers and made the batting look easy. It was an impressive
batting performance by both Indian openers who showed their class. Jemimah Rodrigues
was dismissed for well made 69 off 92 balls by Hayley Mathews. The Indian openers
added 141 runs in 25.1 overs which laid a strong foundation. Mandhana also fell
in quick succession for a quickfire 74 off 63 balls.
Indian captain Mithali Raj and Punam Raut added 40 runs for
the 3rd wicket. Both were dismissed in quick succession. Deepti
Sharma hit the winning runs and helped India register an emphatic 6 wicket win
with 47 balls to spare.
Indian women 195 for 4 in 42.1 overs (Smriti Mandhana 74,
Jemimah Rodrigues 69, Hayley Mathews 3/27) beat West Indies women 194 in 50
overs ( Stafaine Taylor 79, Stacy Ann King 38, Poonam Yadav 2/35, Jhulan
Goswami 2/30) by 6 wickets.
The Indian have moved up to 20 points in the latest ICC Women’s
Championship Table for 2017-2021 and are at number 3. Australia have already qualified
for 2021 World Cup.
