Mumbai Indians won their 3rd IPL title beating
Rising Pune Supergiants by just 1 run in the finals played at Rajiv Gandhi
International Stadium, Hyderabad on 21st May 2017.
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was not an ideal start as Parthiv Patel, and Lendl Simmons were
dismissed cheaply by Jaydev Unadkat. After the loss of two wickets, Rohit
Sharma and Rayudu steadied the innings to take them to 32 for 2 at the end of six
overs.
A superb run out by Steve Smith ended Rayudu’s innings.
Rohit and Rayudu added 33 runs for the 3rd wicket. Soon after Rohit
Sharma was dismissed for 24. Rising Pune Supergiants’ bowlers kept it tight
and reduced Mumbai Indians to 79 for 7. Krunal Pandya played a vital knock for
Mumbai Indians scoring 47 off 38 balls. He and Mitchell Johnson added 50 runs
for the 8th wicket. Krunal was dismissed off the last ball. Mumbai
Indians posted 129 for 8 which was below par. Jaydev Unadkat, Adam Zampa and
Daniel Christian took 2 wickets each.
Chasing 130 runs to win, Ajiyanka Rahane played with
positive intent while Rahul Tripathi was dismissed cheaply for 3. Steve Smith
and Rahane looked in good form taking them to 38 for 1 at the end of six overs.
After the power overs, Smith and Rahane milked the Mumbai
Indian bowlers taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Mitchell Johnson
provided much-needed breakthrough dismissing Rahane for 44. Smith and Rahane
added 54 runs for the 2nd wicket. Mumbai Indians bowlers kept it
tight and did not allow Rising Pune Supergiants batsmen to score runs easily.
Steve Smith completed his fifty off 49 balls.
With 11 runs required to win from 6 balls, Manoj Tiwary
smashed a boundary off the very ball from Mitchell Johnson. Johnson dismissed
Tiwary and well-set Steve Smith. With 4 runs to win, in an attempt to take the
third run, Sundar got run out to give Mumbai Indians a thrilling 1 run win. For
Mumbai Indians, Mitchell Johnson took 3 for 26 while Bumrah 2 for 26.
Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, this was Mumbai Indians'
third IPL title. Despite Mumbai Indians posting a low total, it was a superb
bowling and fielding performance to lead them for a stunning win.

finished top of the points table with 20 points winning 10 and losing only
4. In the first qualifier, Mumbai Indians
lost to Rising Pune Supergiant by 20 runs.
In the qualifier 2, Mumbai Indians showed great composure to
beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium,
Bangalore on 19th May. It was an outstanding performance by Rohit
Sharma led side who looked in great form.
