This Day that year: Rohit Sharma scored his maiden ODI century
On 28th May 2010, Rohit Sharma scored his maiden One-day international century against Zimbabwe played in the first match of the
Tri-series played at Bulawayo. He made his ODI debut for India on 23rd
June 2007 against Ireland at Belfast.
Indian stand-in captain Suresh Raina won the toss and
decided to bat first. Murali Vijay and Dinesh Karthik provided a steady start
to put on 56 runs. Vijay, Virat Kohli and, Dinesh Karthik went in quick
succession which left India at 61 for 3.
Coming at number 4, Rohit Sharma took some time to settle in
the innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. He and Suresh
Raina rescued India from a tough situation putting on 67 runs for the 4th
wicket. The right-handed Rohit completed his fifty off 85 balls. He upped the
ante and created pressure on the Zimbabwean bowlers.
It was an amazing knock by Rohit who reached his maiden ODI
century with a six off Ray Price bowling. The talented batsman from Mumbai was
finally dismissed for 114 off 119 balls which included 6 fours and 4 sixes. His
knock helped India post 285 for 5 in 50 overs. Despite his efforts, India lost
the match by six wickets.
Transformation of Rohit into one of the best batsmen in
ODI cricket
After being asked to open the innings in the 2013 Champions
Trophy tournament played in England, Rohit Sharma has completely transformed
into one of the best batsmen in ODI cricket right now.
He holds the record of the highest individual total in ODI
cricket which is 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014. Rohit is the only player in the
world to score 3 double centuries and has 8 150 plus scores in ODI cricket.
The explosive opener has the 2nd most number of
125 plus scores. He also holds the record of most centuries in a World Cup
edition. During the 2019 WC held in England, Rohit Sharma surpassed Kumar
Sangakkara record of most centuries in WC edition.
So far, Rohit Sharma has played a total of 224 ODI matches (217
innings) and scored so far 9115 runs with an amazing average of 49.27. During
his career, he made 29 centuries and 43 half-centuries to his name.
