This Day that year: Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid created record partnership in ODIs
On 26th May 1999, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid
created record partnership in ODIs during the Group A match against Sri Lanka
played at Taunton.
Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga won the toss and decided
to field first. India lost an early wicket of Sadagoppan Ramesh in the first
over itself. Rahul Dravid came to the crease and looked cautious at the start
of the innings.
Sourav Ganguly also cautious at the start and then took on
the Sri Lankan bowlers. Dravid played with positive intent to complete his
fifty off 43 balls. After the initial struggle, Ganguly showed his class and
reached his 50 off 68 balls. Both Dravid and Ganguly smashed the Sri Lankan
bowlers to all parts of the ground. They kept the scoreboard ticking by rotating
the strike and hitting boundaries at will.
Dravid reached the century first off 102 balls while on the other
hand Ganguly also reached the milestone off 119 balls. After completing their
milestone, both batsmen continued to plunder runs at will especially Sourav
Ganguly. The brilliant partnership ended as Rahul Dravid was run out by Muttiah
Muralitharan for a superb 145 off 129 balls which included 17 fours and 1 six. Dravid
and Ganguly added 318 runs for the 2nd wicket. It was the first 300
partnership in ODI cricket at that time.
Sourav Ganguly continued his attacking approach and reached
his 150 off 143 balls. Despite the fall of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajay Jadeja, Robin
Singh, the Prince of Kolkata made the batting look easy and was dismissed off
the penultimate ball for a sensational 183 off 158 balls. Ganguly smashed 17
fours and 7 sixes. Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly knock helped India post a
mammoth total of 373 for 6 in 50 overs.
In reply to 374, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 216. For his
sensational knock of 183, Sourav Ganguly was named the man of the match. To date,
the partnership is at number 4 among the biggest in ODIs cricket.
