Vincy Premier T10 League: Salt Pond Breakers qualify for the finals with a 5-wicket win
Salt Pond Breakers defeated Grenadine Divers by 5 wickets in
the first semi-finals played at the Arnos Vale Sporting Complex, St Vincent on
Saturday.
Grenadine Divers captain Asif Hooper won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was a flying start by Asif Hooper and Romano Pierre
who put pressure on Salt Pond Breakers bowlers. Hooper and Pierre looked in
great touch which kept the Divers on course for a big total. Wesrick Strough
got the breakthrough for Breakers dismissing Pierre for 22 off 18 balls. Divers
openers added 56 runs in 5.5 overs.
Salt Pond Breakers came back strongly as they picked wickets
at regular intervals. The inform Alex Samuel, Shem Browne and, the lower order
batsman failed to contribute any runs. Out of the 9 wickets, 4 were run-outs.
From 56 for 1, Divers crawled to 82 for 9 in 10 overs. Delorn Johnson was the
pick of the bowlers with amazing figures of 2 for 4, Wesrick Strough taking 2
for 11 and, Jeremy Lane 1 for 21.
It was a dreadful start for the Salt Pond Breakers side as
they wickets of Kadir Nedd, Donwell Hector, Sunil Ambris, and Rickford Walker in
the first over itself which left them in tatters at 3 for 4. Playing his first
match of the tournament Benniton Stapleton and Urnel Thomas rescued Breaker's
side from a hopeless situation. Stapleton was in serious touch smashing the Divers
bowlers. On the other hand, Thomas gave him full support. It was a superb knock
by the young batsman who made 42 off 20 balls which included 1 four and 5
sixes. He was run out by Browne. Thomas and Stapleton added 60 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Delorn Johnson came to the crease and hit big shots which
helped Breakers side register a 5 wicket win to move into the finals. Asif
Hooper was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 24.
Salt Pond Breakers 85 for 5 in 8.5 overs (Benniton Stapleton
42, Urnel Thomas 17*, Asif Hooper 3/24) beat Grenadine Divers 82 for 9 in 10 overs
( Asif Hooper 32, Romano Pierre 22, Delorn Johnson 2/4, Wesrick Strough 2/11)
by 5 wickets.
