This Day That Year: Bangladesh registered their first ODI win over Australia

Bangladesh produced a stunning performance as they defeated Australia for the first time in ODIs during the Tri-series tournament played at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on 18th June 2005.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Adam Gilchrist was dismissed by Mashrafe Mortaza off the 2nd ball of innings. Tapash Baisya produced another beauty to get the wicket of Ponting putting Australia under pressure at 9 for 2.

Matthew Hayden and Damien Martyn steadied the innings with attacking stroke play. Hayden put the Bangladeshi bowlers under pressure. Nazmul Hossain dismissed Hayden for 37. Hayden and Martyn added 48 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Michael Clarke and Martyn came together rescuing the Australian innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Martyn looked composed to complete his fifty off 80 balls. Both batsmen kept on ticking the scoreboard. Baisya got the breakthrough for Bangladesh dismissing Martyn for 77. Martyn and Clarke added 108 runs for the 4th wicket. Clarke was sensible with his stroke play as he completed his fifty off 82 balls. Mike Hussey and Simon Katich increased the tempo of the innings with attacking stroke play as added unbeaten 66 runs for the 6th wicket to help Australia post 249 for 5 in 50 overs.

Chasing 250 runs to win, Nafees Iqbal and Javed Omar began cautiously. Gillespie got the breakthrough for Australia dismissing Nafees Iqbal. Tushar Imran played with positive intent putting the pressure against the top-quality pace bowling. Brad Hogg got the wicket of Imran for 24. Imran and Omar added 34 runs for the 2nd wicket. Javed Omar struggled to time the ball as he scored just 19 runs off 50 balls.

With the scoreboard reading 72 for 3, Mohammad Ashraful and Habibul Bashar was superb with their stroke  life tough for Australian bowlers. Ashraful made the batting look easy to put Australian bowlers under pressure and reached his fifty off 58 balls. A brilliant run out by Gillespie ended a superb partnership of 130 runs for the 4th wicket. Aftab Ahmed came to the crease and played a quickfire cameo. Ashraful kept his composure to reach his century off 100 balls and was dismissed off the very next ball. Aftab Ahmed and Mohammad Rafique hit some lovely shots to put Bangladesh on course for a massive win.

Needing 7 runs to win off 6 balls, Aftab Ahmed hit a six off Gillespie on the first ball itself and then took a single. Bangladesh defeated Australia by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare. Ahmed made 21 off 13 balls while Rafique made 9 off 7 balls.

For his superb 100 runs knock, Ashraful was named the man of the match award.

Bangladesh 250 for 5 in 49.2 overs (Mohammad Ashraful 100, Habibul Bashar 47, Gillespie 2/41) beat Australia 249 for 5 in 50 overs ( Martyn 77, Clarke 54, Tapash Baisya 3/66) by 5 wickets.
