This Day That Year: England women won the inaugural T20 World title
It was a historic day for women’s cricket as England defeated
New Zealand in the finals of the inaugural edition of World T20 played at Lords,
London on 21st June 2009.
England captain Charlotte Edwards won the toss and decided
to field first. It was an ideal start as Laura Marsh got the big wicket of
Suzie Bates in the 1st over itself. Katherine Brunt dismissed Aimee
Watkins to put New Zealand under pressure at 10 for 2. At the end of six overs,
New Zealand made just 18 for 2.
The England bowlers kept a tight line and length not
allowing the White Ferns batsman to score runs easily. Amy Satterthwaite was
the top scorer for Ferns with 19 off 42 balls. England bowled out New Zealand
for 85 in 20 overs.
Chasing a paltry total of 86 runs to win, Charlotte Edwards
and Sarah Taylor started off to a cautious start. Ruck got the breakthrough for
White Ferns dismissing Edwards. At the end of six overs, England scored 23 for
1.
Sarah Taylor was dismissed by Pulford for a 23. Sarah and
Claire Taylor put on 20 runs for the 2nd wicket. Claire Taylor
played with positive intent putting pressure on White Ferns bowlers. Beth Morgan
struggled with her timing and was eventually dismissed for 6. Morgan and Taylor
added 31 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Lydia Greenway also was dismissed cheaply. Taylor and Gunn
helped England register a commanding six-wicket win with 3 overs to spare. Charlotte
Edwards showed their domination in the finals and lifted the first-ever Women’s
World T20 tournament.
For her 3 for 6 in 4 overs, Katherine Brunt was awarded the
player of the match. Claire Taylor for 199 runs named as player of the series.
England women’s team was placed with Sri Lanka, India, and
Pakistan in Group B. They finished top of the points table winning all three
matches to qualify for the semi-finals. In the 2nd Semi-finals
played at Oval, London, England won by 8 wickets as they defeated Australia.
England women 86 for 4 in 17 overs (Claire Taylor 39*, Sarah
Taylor 23, Sophie Devine 1/12, Ruck 1/17) beat New Zealand women 85 in 20 overs
(Amy Satterthwaite 19, Doolan 14, Katherine Brunt 3/6, Shaw 2/17) by 6 wickets.
