This Day That Year: New Zealand beat West Indies in a thrilling 2019 WC encounter
In the second match of the day, New Zealand defeated West
Indies in a thrilling 2019 World Cup game played at Old Trafford, Manchester on
22nd June 2019.
West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to
field first. It was a perfect start as Sheldon Cottrell dismissed Martin
Guptill off the very first ball with a brilliant yorker. Cottrell produced
another beauty to get rid of Colin Munro to put New Zealand under pressure at 7
for 2 in the 1st over.
The experienced duo of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor
steadied the innings for Kiwis with positive stroke play. At the end of 10
overs, New Zealand scored 30 for 2.
Williamson and Taylor took the attack to West Indies
bowlers. Both took singles and hit boundaries on bad balls. Kiwis captain
Williamson led from the front to reach his fifty off 75 balls. Soon after,
Taylor also completed his half-century off 68 balls. The two Kiwis batsmen kept
on ticking the scoreboard. With things looking tough for West Indies, Chris
Gayle got the breakthrough dismissing Taylor for 69. Taylor and Williamson
added 160 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Kane Williamson looked composed with his stroke play to
complete his century off 124 balls. On the other hand, Tom Latham gave him full
support. Latham and Williamson added 43 runs for the 4th wicket.
James Neesham provided the impetus for New Zealand scoring a quickfire 28 off
23 balls.
Williamson was dismissed for a superb 148 off 154 balls.
Williamson and Neesham added 41 runs for the 5th wicket. Colin de
Grandhomme 16 off 6, Mitchell Santer 10 off 5 helped New Zealand post a competitive
total of 291 for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 292 runs to win, West Indies lost 2 early wickets of
Shai Hope and Nicolas Pooran cheaply. Chris Gayle and Shimron Hetymer took the
attack to Kiwis bowlers with big strokes to end the first 10 overs at 59 for 2.
Gayle and Hetymer continued their attacking approach which
put Kiwis under pressure. The explosive Gayle completed his fifty off 51 balls
and then Hetymer also reached half-century off 42 balls. Ferguson got the
breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing Hetymer for 54. Hetymer and Gayle added
122 runs for the 3rd wicket. The Kiwis bowlers picked wickets at
regular intervals to reduce West Indies at 164 for 7.
Carlos Braithwaite came to the crease and played some lovely
strokes. On the other hand, Kemar Roach gave him full support. Matt Henry dismissed
Roach to end 47 runs for the 8th wicket. Braithwaite showed his batting
skills as he completed his fifty off 52 balls. Sheldon Cottrell also stroked
boundaries to give West Indies hope of an unlikely win. Ferguson dismissed Cottrell
to end another important 34 runs stand for the 9th wicket.
With 33 runs required off 18 balls, Braithwaite hit 25 runs from
Matt Henry in the 48th over. In next over, he completed his maiden
ODI century off 80 balls. With 6 runs required, Braithwaite was caught by Trent
Boult to give Kiwis a thrilling 5 runs win.
It was an amazing contest as Carlos Braithwaite produced a breath-taking
innings which almost helped West Indies to register an improbable win. By the virtue of this
loss, the Caribbean side was knocked out of the World Cup.
New Zealand 291 for 8 in 50 overs (Kane Williamson 148, Ross
Taylor 69, Sheldon Cottrell 4/56) beat West Indies 286 in 49 overs (Carlos
Braithwaite 101, Chris Gayle 87, Boult 4/30, Ferguson 3/50) by 5 runs.
For his captains knock of 148, Kane Williamson was awarded
the man of the match.
