Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the finals of the 2009 World
T20 played at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground, Lords on 21st June.
Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and decided
to bat first. The decision backfired as TM Dilshan was dismissed in the very
first over itself by Mohammad Aamir. In the next over, Abdul Razzaq got rid off
Jehan Mubarak for 0 to leave Sri Lanka in big trouble at 2 for 2. Sanath Jayasuriya
played with positive intent putting pressure on Pakistani bowling line up.
Razzaq struck twice to dismiss Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayewardene leaving Sri
Lanka in tatters at 32 for 4. At the end of six overs, Sri Lanka were 34 for 4.
Kumar Sangakkara and Chamara Silva steadied the innings for
Sri Lanka to put on 35 runs for the 5th wicket. Umar Gul dismissed
Silva for 14. Shahid Afridi got the wicket of Isuru Udana to leave Sri Lanka
under immense pressure at 70 for 6.
Sangakkara showed his class against the tight Pakistani bowling
to complete his half-century off 44 balls. On the other hand, Mathews came to
the crease and put the pressure with positive stroke play. Both added unbeaten 68
runs for the 7th wicket to help Sri Lanka post 138 for 6 in 20
overs.
Chasing 139 runs to win, Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan got
Pakistan off to a steady start. Akmal looked in decent touch with positive
stroke play. At the end of six overs, both openers scored 39 for 0.
Sanath Jayasuriya made the breakthrough for Sri Lanka
getting the wicket of Kamran Akmal for 37. Pakistani openers put on 48 runs.
Soon after Muralitharan struck to grab Hasan wicket.
Shahid Afridi came to the crease and played with positive
intent. On the other hand, Shoaib Malik gave Afridi good support. Both batsmen
hit boundaries making life tough for Sri Lankan bowlers. The all-rounder played
a vital hand to reach his fifty off 37 balls.
A leg bye helped Pakistan to win the 2009 World T20 title Pakistan
won the match by 8 wickets with 8 balls to spare. Afridi and Malik added unbeaten
76 runs for the 3rd wicket. It was a historic moment for Pakistani
cricket as they won their first ICC title after the 1992 World Cup.
For his all-round performance, Shahid Afridi was named the man
of the match. TM Dilshan was named the man of the series for his consistent performance.
Pakistan was placed with Netherlands and England in Group B.
All three teams had 2 points each but due to a better run rate, Pakistan finished
at number 2. In the Super 8 Stage, Pakistan defeated New Zealand and Ireland. Their
only loss came against Sri Lanka.
Pakistan held their
nerves to beat South Africa by 7 runs in the first Semi-finals.
Pakistan 139 for 2 in 18.4 overs (Afridi 54*, Akmal 37,
Sanath Jayasuriya 1/8, Muralitharan 1/20) beat Sri Lanka 138 for 6 in 20 overs (Kumar
Sangakkara 64*, Mathews 35*, Abdul Razzaq 3/20, Afridi 1/20) by 8 wickets.
