This Day That Year: Virat Kohli made his Test debut
One of the best batsmen in the current generation, Virat
Kohli made his Test debut against West Indies at Jamaica on 20th
June 2011.
In his debut Test match, Virat Kohli scored 4 and 15.
Despite his failures, India won the match by 63 runs. Kohli came into limelight
with his first Test century against Australia in the 4th Test played
at Adelaide Oval from 24th January 2012.
Kohli scored a brilliant 116 off 213 balls in the first
innings and helped India post 272 runs. In the 2014/2015 Australia tour, the
talented batsman scored twin centuries in the first Test match at Adelaide Oval
from 9th December 2014. He made 115 and scored a sensational 141
which almost took India to an impossible win. It was an amazing performance by
Kohli scoring 169 in the 3rd Test match at Melbourne. He then
scored 147 in the first innings of the fourth Test match at SCG from 6th
January 2015. Kohli was simply sensational with 692 runs in 4 Test matches ( 8
innings) which was the most by an Indian batsman in Test matches in Australia.
Virat Kohli was appointed as the captain of the Indian team
when MS Dhoni was not a part of the team in Adelaide Oval due to an injury.
Since becoming the full-fledged Indian captain in Test
matches, Kohli has created a winning momentum winning 11 successive series at
home which shows the domination. India won Test matches in South Africa,
England but lost the series.
His major achievement came as Kohli became the first Indian
captain to win a Test series on Australian soil after 72 years.
After struggling in the 2014 tour of England, Kohli showed
his class in the 2018 tour of England. He was the leading runs scorer with 593
runs with 2 centuries.
He has played a total of 86 Test matches ( 145 innings) and
scored 7240 runs with a staggering average of 53.62. Among the Indian captains,
Kohli has the highest individual score of 254* in the 2nd Test match
at Pune in 2019.
Kohli became the first Indian to score a century in a historic Pink Ball Test match played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in November 2019. As a captain, Kohli has led India at the top of the points table of the ICC Test Championship.
Kohli has scored so far 27 centuries and 22 half-centuries. He
holds the record of 7 double centuries in Test matches. Coming at number 4, he
plays according to the situation and makes life tough for the opposition
bowlers. Kohli is a part of the Fab four which includes Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson.
Before the Coronavirus pandemic, Kohli struggled a lot in
the Test series against New Zealand. He made 38 runs in 4 innings that he featured.
