This Year That Year: India handed their first defeat of WC 2019

After an unbeaten run, the Indian Cricket Team lost the first match of World Cup 2019 against the hosts England played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on 30th June.

England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat first. The England openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started off cautiously against Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. At the end of 10 overs, England scored 47 for 0.

Roy and Bairstow took on the Indian spin twin which made life tough for Virat Kohli. It was an amazing display by both England openers who showed his class with their power hitting. Bairstow  reached his fifty-first off 56 balls while Jason Roy also completed his half-century off just 41 balls. Both batsmen created enough pressure on the Indian bowlers.

A sensational catch by Ravindra Jadeja at the boundary gave India a much-needed breakthrough ending a dangerous 160 runs stand in just 22.1 overs. The Indian bowlers kept a tight line and length to Joe Root not giving him easy runs. On the other hand, Bairstow played with positive intent to complete his century off 90 balls.

Mohammed Shami got the breakthrough for India dismissing Bairstow and Eoin Morgan in quick succession. Coming at number 5, Ben Stokes looked in decent touch right from word go to keep the scoreboard ticking. On the other hand, Joe Root struggled with his timing. Shami struck again to get rid of Joe Root. Root and Stokes added 70 runs for the 4th wicket.

Ben Stokes looked impressive with his stroke play and completed his half-century off 38 balls. Jos Buttler scored a quickfire cameo scoring 20 off 8 balls. Despite an impressive fightback by Indian bowlers, England posted 337 for 7 in 50 overs.

Chasing 338 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the Indians as KL Rahul was dismissed cheaply by Chris Woakes for 0. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played cautiously as India scored 28 for 1 in the first 10 overs.

Rohit Sharma and Kohli looked in glorious touch putting pressure on the England bowlers. Kohli completed his half-century off 59 balls while Rohit Sharma completed his fifty too off 65 balls.
The experienced duo took on the England bowlers. Liam Plunkett provided the breakthrough dismissing Kohli. Kohli and Rohit added 138 runs for the 2nd wicket. The explosive left-handed Rishabh Pant was promoted at number 4 and looked in decent touch. On the other hand, Rohit completed his century off 106 balls.

Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a well-made 102 by Woakes. Rohit and Pant added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. With 112 runs needed off 11 overs, a brilliant catch by Woakes ended the innings for Pant.
MS Dhoni came to the crease and tried his best to take India over the line. Plunkett struck again to dismiss Hardik Pandya for 45. Kedar Jadhav and Dhoni were not able to score as India made 306 for 5 in 50 overs.

For his 111 off 109 balls, Jonny Bairstow was named the man of the match. By the virtue of this win, England kept the hopes of reaching the semi-finals stage. On the other hand, India lost its first match of 2019 WC.

England 337 for 7 in 50 overs ( Jonny Bairstow 111, Stokes 79, Mohammed Shami 5/69) beat India 306 for 5 in 50 overs ( Rohit Sharma 102, Kohli 66, Plunkett 3/55, Woakes 2/58) by 31 runs.
