All-round England cruise to a comfortable win in the first ODI over Ireland
Thanks to an all-round effort, England started the One-day
international series against Ireland with a comprehensive win played at Ageas
Bowl, Southampton on Thursday. This also marks the start the ICC Men’s ODI
Super League tournament for the qualification of ICC World Cup 2023.
After a gap of 4 and half months return to ODI cricket,
England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to field first. It was a
perfect start for the hosts as David Willey struck in the very first over to
dismiss the dangerous Paul Stirling. The left-arm pacer proved his worth
dismissing Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie. Gareth Delany looked in decent
touch putting pressure on the England bowlers.
After a brief partnership, Saqib Mahmood struck to get rid
of debutant Hary Tector for 0. Willey dismissed Delany and Tucker off
successive balls. Curtis Campher survived the hattrick ball. At the end of 10
overs, Ireland was in deep trouble at 37 for 5.
Eoin Morgan decided to give Willey a sixth successive over.
Adil Rashid was bought into the attack in the 12th over. Kevin O
Brien and Campher steadied the innings for Ireland by taking singles. Kevin O
Brien tried to hit a big shot went into Willey’s hand at long-off. Both Irish
batsmen added 51 runs for the 6th wicket. Simi Singh was run out in miscommunication to be in massive trouble at 79 for 7.
Campher looked solid with his defense techniques and hitting
occasional boundaries. McBrine made his intentions clear playing attacking
strokes. It was another poor stroke by McBrine who tried to hit a big shot
going into the hands of Billings. Campher and McBrine added 66 runs for the 8th
wicket.
Campher reached his maiden ODI century off 103 balls. Barry McGrathy
was caught by James Vince. David Willey picked the wicket of Craig Young with a
superb running catch by Jason Roy. Ireland was bowled out for 172 in 44.4
overs. Willey took his first five-wicket haul in ODIs.
Ireland spearhead Barry McGrathy suffered an injury and had
to walk off that led to Ireland one bowler short. Chasing a paltry total of
173 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the hosts as Jonny Bairstow was
dismissed by spinner McBrine via a review. The umpire gave it not out and
Ireland captain Balbirnie decided to review the decision, it was reversed.
Jason Roy looked in decent touch right from the word go putting pressure on the
Ireland bowling line up. After hitting two successive boundaries, Craig Young
produced a brilliant delivery to dismiss dangerous Roy. James Vince played with
intent and looked in decent touch. After hitting a streaky boundary, Vince was dismissed
by Young. At the end of 10 overs, England was 59 for 3.
Campher impressive debut continued as he took the wicket of
Tom Banton to leave England in little trouble at 78 for 4. England captain Eoin
Morgan looked confident right from word go while Sam Billings showed his class
and played reverse sweeps against the spinners. Billings completed his fifty
off 41 balls. Both England batsmen looked at ease putting on unbeaten 96 runs
stand for the 5th wicket. Morgan hit the winning runs with a six to
help the hosts win the match by 6 wickets and 133 balls to spare.
For his 5 for 30 in 8.4 overs, David Willey was named
the man of the match. England started the World Super League with 10 points.
The hosts take a 1-0 lead with 2nd match to be played on 1st
August at the same venue.
England 174 for 4 in 27.5 overs (Billings 67*, Morgan 36*,
Craig Young 2/56, Campher 1/26) beat Ireland 172 in 44.4 overs ( Campher 59*,
McBrine 40, David Willey 5/30) by 6 wickets.
