England versus West Indies 3rd Test 3rd Day: England in a commanding position
The England Cricket Team continued their domination against
a listless West Indies on the 3rd day of the 3rd Test
match played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 137 for 6, Jason Holder
and Shane Dowrich started steadily with good solid defense and confident stroke
play. England was deprived of a wicket as Chris Woakes overstepped as Holder
was caught by Rory Burns. Archer, Anderson and Woakes were not up to the mark.
After the first drinks break, Stuart Broad did the damage by getting rid of
Holder. Holder and Dowrich added 68 runs for the 7th wicket.
Broad wreaked havoc by dismissing Rakheem Cornwall and Kemar
Roach in the same over. Shane Dowrich looked steady tried to hit a shot and was
caught by Woakes to bowl out West Indies for 197. The experienced Broad ended
with figures of 6 for 31. In their second innings, Rory Burns and Dom Sibley
remained solid to take England at 10 for 0 at lunch.
The things went from bad to worse for the visitors as Shai
Hope kept in the place of Dowrich. Hope was also injured while keeping as J Da
Silva replaced him. The West Indies bowlers kept digging in with good lines and
lengths not allowing the England openers to run away. Burns and Sibley remained
confident with their defense. It was a solid session for England as they went
into the tea break at 86 for 0.
In the third session, Rory Burns and Sibley continued to
dominate the West Indies tired bowling. Sibley played with solid defense to
complete his fifty off 121 balls. Soon after Rory Burns completed his
half-century off 111 balls. Jason Holder finally got the breakthrough for the
visitors dismissing Sibley. Sibley was given out by the umpire and he decided
to review the decision, the decision remained out. The England openers added
114 runs.
England captain Joe Root came to the crease and looked positive
right from word go. West Indies captain Jason Holder went off the field. Burns
and Root upped the ante with aggressive stroke play. Stand-in captain Kraigg Braithwaite
decided not to review a decision that was out. England captain Root completed
his half-century off 49 balls.
Burns and Root kept the scoreboard ticking with aggressive
stroke play. Soon after Burns was dismissed by Chase for 90, Root decided to
declare the innings on 226 for 2. Both batsmen added 112 runs for the 2nd
wicket. England set a massive target of 399 runs to win.
Stuart Broad came into the game right again by getting rid
of John Campbell and nightwatchmen Kemar Roach cheaply to put visitors under
immense pressure. West Indies ended the 3rd day at 10 for 2.
The fourth day’s weather is for heavy rains. With the way
West Indies batted in the series, it looks England would seal the series on the
final day.
