England versus WI 3rd Test 2nd Day: England in a driver seat at the end of day 2
Thanks to a brilliant knock by Broad and bowling display,
England ended the 2nd day of the 3rd Test match played at
Old Trafford, Manchester in a commanding position on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 258 for 4, Ollie Pope and
Jos Buttler survived anxious moments from Roach and Gabriel bowling. Pope was
dropped by Rakheem Cornwall at slips. Gabriel produced a beauty to dismiss Pope
without adding to his overnight score of 91. Buttler and Pope added 140 runs
for the 5th wicket. Roach got rid of Chris Woakes with an inside
edge onto the stumps. Gabriel struck again to get dismiss Buttler with a good
low catch by Holder. Jofra Archer was dismissed by Gabriel with another catch
by West Indies captain to leave England at 280 for 8.
Stuart Broad played with intent and took the short ball
tactics. The tailender put the West Indies bowlers under pressure by taking on
them. After the spell by Roach and Gabriel, Holder bought himself into the
attack but could not stop the flow of runs. On the other hand, Bess gave the
strike to Broad. Broad completed his fifty off just 33 balls and frustrated the
West Indies bowlers. Roston Chase finally ended Broad’s innings with a full
toss hitting straight to Blackwood's hand. Broad made 62 off 45 balls and added
76 runs for the 9th wicket. James Anderson also scored a vital hand
by making 11 runs. Jason Holder dismissed Anderson with a good catch by
Cornwall to bowl out England for 369. The umpire called it lunch.
It was a perfect start for England as Stuart Broad dismissed
Kraigg Braithwaite with a good catch by Joe Root at slips. Campbell was given a
reprieve as Ben Stokes dropped a sitter at slips. After five-over spell by
Anderson and Broad, Archer was bought into the attack and bowled with pace.
John Campbell looked decent before Archer dismissed him with a quick bouncer.
Campbell and Hope added 43 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Shai Hope did not look comfortable with inside edges. Brooks
came to the crease and was peppered by bouncers. James Anderson did his magic
to get rid of Hope with a beauty leaving West Indies in trouble at 58 for 3.
West Indies went into the tea break at 59 for 3.
It was a perfect start for England as James Anderson
dismissed Brooks with a ball that hit inside edge and straight to Buttler to
leave West Indies in tatters at 59 for 4. Blackwood was given out by the umpire
and decided to review, the decision was overturned as it was missing leg. The
experienced Stuart Broad produced a great delivery to get rid of Chase to
reduce the visitors at 73 for 5.
Blackwood remained solid enough with good defense. England
decided to review the decision for an LBW but on review, it was going over the
stumps. Jason Holder and Blackwood looked good with their attacking approach.
Woakes produced a beauty to dismiss Blackwood. Blackwood and Holder added 37
runs for the 6th wicket. Holder looked in decent touch while Dowrich
looked uncomfortable before bad light called off play. West Indies ended the 2nd
day at 137 for 6 still trail by 232 runs.
West Indies 137 for 6 in 46.1 overs ( Campbell 32, Holder
24*, Blackwood 26, Broad 2/17, James Anderson 2/17) trail England 369 in 111.5 overs (Ollie Pope
91, Buttler 67, Broad 62, Roach 4/72, Chase 2/36, Gabriel 2/77) by 232 runs.
