This Day That Year: Ishant Sharma magical spell gives India a memorable Test win at Lords


The Indian Cricket Team registered a memorable win at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground in the 2nd Test match against hosts England on 21st July 2014.

Setting a target of 319 runs to win, Ishant Sharma dismissed Ian Bell and England captain Alistair Cook on the fourth day. Moeen Ali and Joe Root had a great beginning on the fifth and final day. The tall-lanky fast bowler produced the magic as he dismissed Moeen Ali at the stroke of lunch to give India’s hope of winning the Test match. Ali and Root added 101 runs for the 5th wicket.

Ishant Sharma used the short ball tactics brilliantly. He dismissed Matt Prior with the same tactics putting the host batsmen under pressure. It was an amazing bowling display as got rid of Root, Stokes, and Broad with the same tactics. Ravindra Jadeja produced a brilliant run-out to give India a memorable win by 95 runs.

This was India’s first win at Lords in Test matches after 1986. It was a team performance by the Indian Cricket Team. After being invited into bat, India was struggling at 145 for 7. Rahane scored a brilliant century on green Top helping them to post a competitive total of 295.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was at his best in the first innings picking 6 for 82. His efforts helped India restrict England lead to just 24. Murali Vijay played a solid knock by making 95. Despite the middle order collapse, Ravindra Jadeja 68 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar 52 helped India post 342 runs.

India’s bowling in the 2nd innings was up to the mark and kept the pressure on England's team. Moeen Ali and Joe Root did stitch a partnership but Ishant Sharma wicket before lunch believed that India could create history.

For his career-best figures of 7/74, Ishant Sharma was named the man of the match. India took a 1-0 lead in the series.

India 295 in 91.4 overs ( Rahane 103, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 36, James Anderson 4/60) and 342 in 103.1 overs ( Murali Vijay 95, Ravindra Jadeja 68, Ben Stokes 3/51, Liam Plunkett 3/65) beat England 319 in 105.5 overs ( Gary Balance 110, Plunkett 55*, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 6/82) and 223 in 88.2 overs ( Joe Root 66, Ali 39, Ishant Sharma 7/74) by 95 runs.
