CPL Match 12: All-round performance helps Jamaica beat Guyana Amazon Warriors
A disciplined bowling effort and great knock by Andre
Russell helped Jamaica Tallawahs defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in a low
scoring thriller played at Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on
Tuesday.
Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell won the toss and decided to field
first. It was an ideal start as Fidel Edwards got rid of Brandon King off the
very first ball. The Afghan teenager Mujeeb Ur Rahman did the damage by dismissing
Shimron Hetymer and Anthony Bramble to leave Guyana in trouble at 17 for 3.
Nicolas Pooran and Ross Taylor struggled against Tallawahs
bowlers. At the end of six overs, Guyana Amazon Warriors scored 30 for 3.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman produced a beauty to get the wicket of Pooran. Pooran and
Taylor put on 38 runs for the 4th wicket. Sandeep Lammichhane,
Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fidel Edwards kept taking wickets at regular intervals leaving
Guyana in tatters at 63 for 7. Naveen-ul-Haq provided some relief for Guyana
with a run ball 20 but only posted 108 for 9 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 109 runs to win, Tallawahs lost an early wicket of
Chadwick Walton cheaply by Imran Tahir. Glenn Phillips and Blackwood played
with intent putting pressure on Warriors bowlers. Naveen-ul-Haq struck for Guyana
getting rid of dangerous Phillips. Phillips and Blackwood put on 34 runs for
the 2nd wicket.
Asif Ali and Rovman Powell struggled to time the ball.
Warriors bowlers kept a tight line and length leaving Tallawahs batsmen on the
backfoot. After Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed Blackwood, the match could have gone
any side.
The explosive Andre Russell showed his power-hitting and
made sure Tallawahs are on course for a win. Russell and Bonner put on unbeaten
51 runs for the 6th wicket to help Jamaica register 5 wicket win.
This was Jamaica’s 2nd win of the tournament in 4
matches. For his brilliant bowling spell, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was named the man of
the match.
Jamaica Tallawahs 113 for 5 in 18 overs ( Bonner 30*,
Russell 23*, Phillips 26, Naveen-ul-Haq 2/35) beat Guyana Amazon Warriors 108
for 9 in 20 overs ( Ross Taylor 23, Naveen ul-Haq 20*, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 3/11)
