CPL Match 14: Barbados Tridents register an emphatic win over Jamaica

 

After 3 successive losses, defending Champions Barbados Tridents registered an emphatic win over Jamaica Tallawahs in the 2nd match of the day played at Queens Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on Wednesday.

Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Tridents openers Shai Hope and Johnson Charles. Kyle Mayers looked in decent touch putting pressure on Tallawahs bowlers. On the other hand, Tridents captain Jason Holder came up the order. At the end of 6 overs, Tridents scored 37 for 2.

Mayers showed his class with his power-hitting while Holder gave the strike to him. Carlos Braithwaite got the breakthrough dismissing Holder. Holder and Mayers put on 63 runs for the 3rd wicket. Rashid Khan was promoted up the order but was dismissed for 0 by Sandeep Lammichhane.

Tallawahs bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals while Mayers made the look easy on a tough batting pitch. Mayers reached his maiden T20 fifty off 40 balls. With Tridents struggling at 90 for 6, Mayers and Santer rescued the innings putting on 50 runs for the 7th wicket. Mayers was dismissed in the final over for a superb 85 off 59 balls with 3 fours and 8 sixes. Tridents posted 148 for 7 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 149 runs to win, it was not an ideal start as Glenn Phillips was dismissed in the first over itself by Santer. Santer and captain Jason Holder broke the backbone of Tallawahs batting line up. At the end of six overs, Jamaica scored 26 for 3.

Hayden Walsh Junior dismissed Asif Ali to leave Jamaica in trouble at 27 for 4. Jermaine Blackwood and Bonner steadied the innings with positive stroke play. Santer struck again to dismiss Blackwood ending 39 runs stand for the 5th wicket. Rashid Khan got wickets of Carlos Braithwaite and well-set Bonner. Tridents kept on the pressure and restricted Jamaica to 112 for 9 in 20 overs. Tridents won the match by a comfortable 36 runs margin.

For his 85 off 59 balls, Kyle Mayers was named the man of the match award.

Barbados Tridents 148 for 7 in 20 overs ( Mayers 85, Mitchell Santer 20*, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 3/14) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 112 for 9 in 20 overs ( Bonner 31, Blackwood 28, Santer 2/10, Rashid Khan 2/33) by 36 runs.
