England versus Pakistan 2nd T20I: Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan leads England to a famous win
A superb batting effort by Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan ensured
that England registered a comfortable win in the 2nd T20I match
played at Old Trafford, Manchester on Sunday.
England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to
field first. Pakistani openers Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman got off to a decent
start with positive stroke play putting pressure against Tom Curran and Chris
Jordan. At the end of six overs, Pakistani openers scored 51 for 0.
After the power play overs, Adil Rashid and Lewis Gregory
were bought into the attack. As things were looking good, Adil provided the
breakthrough getting the wicket of Fakhar for 36 off 22 balls. Pakistani
openers added 72 runs in 8.3 overs to lay a strong foundation for a massive
total. Mohammad Hafeez came to the crease and took the attack to England
bowlers with aggressive stroke play.
Babar Azam impressed with his strokes and completed his
fifty off 37 balls. Rashid struck again by getting rid of well-set Babar for a
superb 56. The experienced duo off
Hafeez and Shoaib Malik scored 23 runs from Tom Curran’s over that included 2
sixes in an over. Jordan got the wicket of Malik. Hafeez completed his fifty with
a lovely scoop shot over fine leg off 26 balls. Tom Curran bowled a stunning 20th
over giving away just 7 runs and took the wicket of Hafeez. Pakistan posted a competitive
total of 195 for 4 in 20 overs.
Chasing a big total of 196 runs to win, Jonny Bairstow and
Tom Banton provided a flying start to the England team. Bairstow who was
dismissed cheaply in the first T20I took off taking on Pakistani bowlers. Mohammad
Aamir had to hobble off due to an injury. The England openers raced to 65 for 0
at the end of six overs.
Shahdab Khan was bought into the attack and got the breakthrough
getting rid of Jonny Bairstow with a top edge catch to Imad Wasim. England
openers added 66 runs. The leg spinner struck with the next ball dismissing
Banton. Eoin Morgan survived a close LBW shout as Babar decided to review the
decision, it was retained due to umpires' call.
Morgan took the attack on Pakistani bowling line-up with big
strokes. Haris Rauf bowled a decent first over. It was an amazing batting
display by Morgan and Malan who smashed part-time Iftikhar Ahmed for 18 runs to
change the momentum of the game. England captain Morgan took the game away from
Pakistan.
Morgan looked in sensational form and completed his fifty
off just 27 balls. Malan gave good support to the England captain making life
tough for Pakistani bowling. Haris Rauf finally struck by dismissing Morgan for
a superb knock. Moeen Ali was early on the shot and caught by Babar Azam.
Sam Billings came to the crease and hit 2 lovely strokes. Dawid
Malan completed his fifty off 35 and hit the winning runs. England chased down
this massive target with 5 wickets and 5 balls to spare.
For his 66 off 33 balls, England captain Eoin Morgan was
awarded the man of the match. With this win, England takes 1-0 lead in the
series. The third and deciding match will take place on 1st September.
England 199 for 5 in 19.1 overs ( Eoin Morgan 66, Malan 54*,
Bairstow 44, Shadab Khan 3/34, Haris Rauf 2/34) beat Pakistan 195 for 4 in 20
overs ( Mohammad Hafeez 69, Babar Azam 56, Adil Rashid 2/32) by five wickets.
