England versus Pakistan 3rd Test 1st Day: Zak Crawley and Buttler puts England in a commanding position

Thanks to an unbeaten partnership between Crawley and Jos Buttler, England have ended the first day of the 3rd Test match in a commanding position played at Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Friday.

England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first. Dom Sibley and Rory Burns began off steadily without any trouble initially. Shaheen Shah Afridi got the wicket of Rory Burns going into the hands of Shan Masood. The umpire called it for a review for a catch as the soft signal was out, the decision remained out. This was the third time that Rory Burns was dismissed by Afridi in the series.

Zak Crawley started off the innings with a lovely boundary. Mohammad Abbas bowled some beauties but look out of color. Pakistan captain Azhar Ali bought in Yasir Shah into the attack in the 11th over. Naseem Shah came to bowl replacing Mohammad Abbas. Zak Crawley looked in fine touch putting the bad balls away for boundaries. England went into the first drinks break at 48 for 1.

After the drinks break, Crawley and Sibley kept on ticking the scoreboard. Crawley looked comfortable against the pacers and Yasir. Yasir got the breakthrough for Pakistan by dismissing Sibley. Sibley was given out by the umpire for LBW and decided to review the decision, it remained out. Sibley and Crawley added 61 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Naseem Shah troubled Root with his pace and struggled against Yasir Shah. Before the lunch break, Shaheen Shah Afridi was bought into the attack. Afridi looked threatening to beat the outside edge of Crawley. With the final ball of session 1, Crawley hit a lovely boundary to complete his fifty off 80 balls. At the end of the first session, England made 91 for 2.

After the lunch break, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Abbas started the proceedings for Pakistan. Yasir Shah was bought into the attack replacing Abbas. Naseem broke through dismissing Joe Root with a beauty. Root and Crawley added 41 runs for the 3rd wicket. Yasir got rid of Ollie Pope cheaply to leave England in trouble at 127 for 4.

The Pakistani captain bowled Yasir from one end while rotated the fast bowlers. Crawley looked in fine touch putting the visitor’s bowlers under pressure. Fawad Alam was also tried for a few overs but did not work. England ended the 2nd session 184 for 4.

Zak Crawley on 97 at tea reached his maiden Test century off 171 balls. Mohammad Abbas and Naseem started the session for Pakistan. After the initial spell, Yasir Shah was bought into the attack. Buttler was severe on Yasir smashing him for 16 runs putting the Pakistani bowlers under pressure.

Jos Buttler played with intent and completed his fifty off 85 balls. Crawley showed his class making the batting look easy to reach 150 off 233 balls. Pakistan captain Azhar Ali took the 2nd new ball immediately.

Shaheen Shah Afridi looked erratic with the 2nd new ball along with Mohammad Abbas. After the initial spell, Naseem Shah was given another chance. Abbas again troubled Crawley beating outside edge. Crawley and Buttler put on unbeaten 205 runs for the 5th wicket so far. England ended in a commanding position at 332 for 4.

 Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday.  The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday. It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli. Yadav struck again to dismiss Malan with another good catch by Rohit Sharma to leave England in big trouble at 62 for 5. Ollie Pope survived few anxious moments against Bumrah and Yadav.
