This Day That Year: Bangladesh registered an historic win over Australia
The Bangladesh Cricket Team produced a sensational
performance as they defeated Australia for the first time in Test matches. They
achieved this feat on the 4th Day of the 1st Test match
played at Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka on 30th
August 2017.
With a target of 265 runs to win, Australia ended the 3rd
day at 109 for 2 with David Warner at 75 not out while Steve Smith not out on
25. Warner and Smith began the final day on a bright note putting the pressure
on the Bangladesh bowlers. The explosive left-handed batsman Warner completed a
superb century.
Shakib AL Hasan provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh
dismissing the dangerous Warner for 112. The Bangladeshi spinners consisting of
Shakib, Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan wreaked havoc by reducing Australia to
199 for 8. Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins put on 27 runs for the 9th
wicket before Mehidy Hasan got rid of Lyon to help Bangladesh inch close to a
famous win.
Taijul Islam finished the job for Bangladesh as he dismissed
Josh Hazlewood to bowl out Australia for 244 to give the hosts a memorable 20
run win. It was an amazing performance by the Bangla Tigers who stunned a
strong Australian unit.
Shakib AL Hasan was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh
in the 2nd innings with figures of 5 for 85, Taijul Islam 3 for 60
and Miraz 2 for 80.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start as the hosts lost 3 quick wickets with
the scoreboard reading 10. The experienced duo of Tamim and Shakib AL Hasan put
on a valuable 155 runs for the 4th wicket to lead Bangladesh
recovery. It was a decent performance by Bangladesh as they were bowled out for
260 in the first innings.
Mehidy Hasan and Shakib AL Hasan combined well to leave Australia
struggling 18 for 3 at the end of day 1. The Bangladeshi spinners did a superb
job and made life tough for the Aussies batsmen. Shakib AL Hasan 5 for 68,
Hasan Miraz 3 for 62 and Taijul Islam 1 for 32 bowled out Australia for 217 in
the first innings to take a 43 runs lead in the first innings.
In their second innings, Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal began
off well. At the end of day 2, Bangladesh ended on 45 for 1. Tamim Iqbal looked
impressive with his stroke play and made an attacking 78 off 155 balls. His
knock along with Rahim 41 helped Bangladesh post 221 runs in the 2nd
innings to set a stiff target of 265 runs to win.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib AL Hasan did the damage for
Bangladesh by getting wickets of Matt Renshaw and Usman Khawaja. Warner and
Smith ensured that they end day 3 in a decent position.
Bangladesh and Australia have played 6 Test matches. It was
their first win in Test matches against the Australian team.
For his all-round performance, Shakib AL Hasan was named the
man of the match award. Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the 2 match series.
Bangladesh 260 in 78.5 overs ( Shakib AL Hasan 84, Tamim Iqbal 71, Pat Cummins 3/63, Ashton Agar 3/46) and 221 in 79.3 overs ( Tamim Iqbal 78, Mushfiqur Rahim 41, Nathan Lyon 6/82) beat Australia 217 in 74.5 overs ( Matt Renshaw 45, Ashton Agar 41*, Shakib AL Hasan 5/68, Miraz 3/62) and 244 in 70.5 overs ( Warner 112, Steve Smith 37, Shakib AL Hasan 5/85) by 20 runs.
