This Day That Year: England broke Sri Lanka record for highest ODI total
The England Cricket Team created a record by breaking Sri
Lanka’s record of the highest ODI total. They achieved this remarkable feat
against Pakistan in the 3rd ODI played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham
on 30th August 2016.
England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat
first. Jason Roy and Alex Hales gave the team a flying start putting pressure
on Pakistani bowling line-up. Roy could not contribute much as he was dismissed
by Hasan Ali for 15. At the end of 10 overs, England posted 64 for 1.
Alex Hales and Joe Root made the batting look easy taking advantage
of the short boundaries. Hales reached his fifty off just 55 balls while Root showed
his class by taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Hales upped the
ante with positive stroke play making life tough for the Pakistani bowling line-up.
Hales looked in sensational form and completed his century
off 83 balls. On the other hand, Root remained steady to reach his 50 off 58
balls. It was an amazing batting display by Hales who kept on piling on the
pressure. Both batsmen complemented each other and played an array of strokes.
Hales reached his 150 off 110 balls and kept on ticking the scoreboard with utmost
ease.
Hales's brilliance came to an end as he got out to Hasan Ali
for a superb 171 off 122 balls. Hales and Root put on 248 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Soon after, Root was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz for 85.
England captain Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler plundered the
Pakistani bowling line-up. Both batsmen played innovative strokes making life
miserable for visitors. After taking a few balls, Buttler showed his class and
completed his fifty off 22 balls while Eoin Morgan also reached his milestone
off just 24 balls.
It was a breath-taking display of batting by Morgan and
Buttler as they put on unbeaten 161 runs for the 4th wicket. Jos
Buttler boundary off the last ball helped England post the record total in ODI
format. Buttler remained not out on 90 off 51 balls with 7 fours and 7 sixes
while Morgan on 57 off 27 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes.
The target was a steep ask for the Pakistani side as they
scored 275 in 42.4 overs. England broke Sri Lanka’s record of 442 for 9 against The Netherlands. England's performance in ODI’s has been remarkable as they broke
its own record of the highest ODI total.
For his record 171 off 122 balls, Alex Hales was named the
man of the match award. By the virtue of this win, England won the ODI series.
England 444 for 3 in 50 overs ( Hales 171, Buttler 90*, Root
85, Hasan Ali 2/74) beat Pakistan 275 in 42.4 overs ( Sharjeel Khan 58,
Mohammad Aamir 58, Chris Woakes 4/41) by 169 runs.
