This Day That Year: Indian male shuttler creates history

It was a historic moment for Indian badminton fans as Sai Praneeth won a medal at the BWF World Championship 2019 played at Basel, Switzerland on 24th August 2019.

Sai Praneeth had a great start to the tournament as he defeated J-Ho-Shue of Canada in two straight sets by 21-17, 21-16. It was a dominating performance by the Indian star who looked shaky at the start but played with aggressive intent and won the match easily to move into the 2nd round.

In the 2nd round of the tournament, Praneeth defeated Korean L D-k of South Korea in a comfortable manner by 21-16, 21-15. The Indian dominated the game right from word go and never allowed the Korean player a chance to comeback into it to qualify for the third round.

The 16th ranked Indian player faced a tough opponent in the third round facing Anthony Gingting. It was a close first game with both players fighting for each point, but Sai held his nerves to win the first set at 21-19. The second game saw the Indian dominate the Indonesian player and won it easily at 21-13 to move into the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Sai took on 2018 Asian Games gold medallists Jonathan Christie. It was an amazing display of badminton as both players did not give an inch. Christie started off brightly before the Indian took six successive points to 8-4 lead. The match went neck to neck as both players showed their aggression with smashes until Sai earned the first match point. Jonathan Christie never gave up and leveled the scores at 21-21.

Sai Praneeth could not convert another match point he made an error of judgment on the baseline after a 32-rally shot. The Indian held his nerves to win the first set with a smash at 24-22 lasting a total of 31 minutes.

In the second game, the Indian showed his domination and opened a 7-1 lead right from word go. Despite Jonathan Christie's efforts, Sai's defense was too strong to win the 2nd game at 21-14 to move into the semi-finals.

Sai Praneeth became the 2nd Indian shuttler after a gap of 36 years to win a medal at the BWF World Championship history. Prakash Padukone won a bronze medal at the 1983 event.

It was a one-sided affair as Sai was outplayed by Kento Momota losing the match in two straight sets by 13-21, 8-21.
