This Day That Year: Jasprit Bumrah grabbed his 2nd five wicket haul in Test matches
The backbone of the Indian bowling line up in limited-overs
format, Jasprit Bumrah was at his best as proved his mettle by grabbing his 2nd
five-wicket haul in Test matches. He achieved this remarkable feat during the 4th
day of the 3rd Test match against England played at Trent Bridge,
Nottingham on 22nd August 2018.
After losing the first two Test matches in the series, Virat
Kohli led side came back strongly at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. England captain
Joe Root won the toss and decided to field first on a tough wicket.
Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul started off brightly putting on
60 runs for the opening wicket. The Indian team lost 3 quick wickets including the
openers and Pujara. India went into the lunch break at 82 for 3.
Ajiyanka Rahane and Virat Kohli rescued the innings for
India put on 159 runs for the 4th wicket to put visitors back
into the game. India ended the first day in a good position at 307 for 6 and was eventually
bowled out for 329 runs.
Hardik Pandya’s career-best figures of 5 for 28 while Bumrah
took the wickets of Keaton Jennings and Jos Buttler helped India bowl out
England for a paltry total of 161. The Indian batting showed their class to end
day 2 at 124 for 2.
Virat Kohli’s 103, Pujara 72 and Hardik Pandya’s run ball 52
not out helped India declare their innings on 352 for 7.
After Ishant Sharma picking 2 openers, Jasprit Bumrah got
rid of England captain Joe Root to leave the hosts in big trouble. With the partnership
between Jos Buttler and Stokes going strong, the Indian captain Kohli took the
2nd new ball. Bumrah struck immediately to get rid of the centurion
Buttler.
Bumrah then bowled a beauty to dismiss Jonny Bairstow, a
brute of a bouncer to dismiss Chris Woakes. It was an amazing performance by the
young pace bowler who grabbed the wicket of Stuart Broad to grab his fifth
wicket of the innings. R Ashwin took the wicket of James Anderson helping India
register a famous 203 runs win.
Jasprit Bumrah ended with figures of 5 for 85 in 29 overs.
Since his debut against South Africa at Cape Town in 2018, Bumrah took his
maiden five-wicket haul in Test matches during the 3rd match of the
series at Johannesburg. He finished with figures of 5 for 54 in 18.5 overs to
help India register a famous win despite losing it 1-2.
Bumrah has played a total of 14 Test matches (28 innings)
and taken 5 five-wicket hauls with career-best figures of 6 for 27.
India 329 in 94.5 overs ( Virat Kohli 97, Rahane 81, James Anderson 3/64, Broad 3/72) and 352 for 7 in 110 overs ( Kohli 103, Pujara 72, Pandya 52*, Rashid 3/101) beat England 161 in 38.2 overs ( Buttler 39, Cook 29, Hardik Pandya 5/28) and 317 in 104.5 overs ( Jos Buttler 106, Stokes 62, Jasprit Bumrah 5/85) by 203 runs.
