This Day That Year: Jasprit Bumrah career best figures in ODIs
The backbone of the Indian One-day international bowling line-up, Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc during the 3rd match against
Sri Lanka played at Palleke International Stadium, Palleke on 27th
August 2017.
Sri Lankan stand-in captain Chamara Kapugedra won the toss
and decided to bat first. In his 2nd over, Bumrah produced a
brilliant yorker to get rid of Niroshan Dickwella. He got his 2nd wicket of the innings by dismissing Kusal Mendis.
With the partnership between Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne
going strong, Kohli decided to bring on Bumrah and broke the partnership
getting the wicket of Chandimal. Chandimal and Thirimanne added 72 runs for the
3rd wicket. The Indian bowlers kept on taking wickets at regular
intervals. Bumrah produced brilliant yorkers to get rid of Siriwardena and
Akila Dananjaya. He finished with figures of 5/27 in 10 overs restricting the
hosts to 217 for 9.
In reply, the Indian team struggled as Shikhar Dhawan, Virat
Kohli, KL Rahul, and Kedar Jadhav were dismissed making it 61 for 4. Rohit
Sharma and MS Dhoni unbeaten partnership of 157 runs for the 5th
wicket helped India register a six-wicket win with 29 balls to spare. Rohit
remained not out on 124 off 145 balls while MS Dhoni not out on 67 off 86
balls. With this performance, Men in Blue took the series and commanding 3-0
lead.
For his maiden five-wicket haul in ODI cricket, Jasprit
Bumrah was named the man of the match award. Bumrah is one of the best bowlers with
his unorthodox action. He picks wickets in the power play overs and can produce
brilliant yorkers in death overs that is tough to hit.
He made his ODI debut for the Men in Blue during the last
match against Australia at Sydney on 23rd January 2016. During his
short career so far, Bumrah has taken 104 wickets from 64 matches ( 64 innings)
with an economy of 4.55 runs per over.
India 218 for 4 in 45.1 overs ( Rohit Sharma 124*, MS Dhoni
67*, Danajaya 2/38) beat Sri Lanka 217 for 9 in 50 overs ( Thirimanne 80,
Chandimal 36, Jasprit Bumrah 5/27) by six wickets.
