Under the captaincy of Graeme Smith, the South African Cricket Team became the number 1 ranked Test side after defeating England at Lords on 20th August 2012.

South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision did not pay off as the visitors lost 4 wickets of Smith, Alvrio Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, and AB de Villiers. Thanks to a brilliant partnership between JP Duminy and Vernon Philander, the visitors recovered ending the first day on 262 for 7.

Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel's contributions lower down the order helped the visitors post 309 runs in the first innings. The South African pace trio of Steyn, Morkel, and Philander pushed the hosts under pressure by reducing them to 54 for 4.

A rescue act by Ian Bell and Jonny Bairstow helped the hosts recover to end day 2 on 208 for 5. Morne Morkel, Philander, and Steyn took all 10 wickets to bowl out England for 315. The hosts took a slender lead of 6 runs.

Hashim Amla led the way for the South African side in the 2nd innings. He remained not out on 57 as the visitors ended day 3 on 145 for 3. It was a superb batting effort by the South African side as they posted 351 runs to give England a competitive target of 346 runs to win.

A superb bowling effort by Vernon Philander with the new ball broke the England batting line up. Despite Matt Prior 73, Stuart Broad 37, Bairstow 54, Swann 41, South Africa bowled out England for 294 to give the visitors a 51 runs win.

By winning this Test match, South Africa dethroned England from the number 1 spot. This is the 2nd time that the Proteas rose to the top spot in Test matches. For his all-round performance, Vernon Philander was awarded the man of the match.

South Africa 309 in 101.2 overs ( JP Duminy 61, Vernon Philander 61, Steve Finn 4/75, James Anderson 3/76) and 351 in 124.2 overs ( Hashim Amla 121, AB de Villiers 43, Steve Finn 4/75) beat England 315 in 107.3 overs ( Jonny Bairstow 95, Ian Bell 58, Morne Morkel 4/80, Steyn 4/94) and 294 in 82.5 overs ( Matt Prior 73, Bairstow 54, Trott 63, Philander 5/30) by 51 runs.

 Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday.  The second day saw some great action from both teams as the match hangs in the balance played at Kennington Oval, London on Friday. It was an ideal start for India as Umesh Yadav grabbed the wicket of nightwatchman Craig Overton with a sharp catch by Virat Kohli. Yadav struck again to dismiss Malan with another good catch by Rohit Sharma to leave England in big trouble at 62 for 5. Ollie Pope survived few anxious moments against Bumrah and Yadav.
