This Day That Year: West Indies stunned England in Test match
It was an amazing performance by the West Indies side as
they chased a massive score in the fourth against the hosts England played at Headingly,
Leeds on 29th August 2017.
Chasing a massive target of 322 runs to win in the fourth
innings, West Indies ended the fourth day on 5 for 0. Kieran Powell and Kraigg
Braithwaite began off steadily putting on 46 runs for the opening wicket. Broad
struck the opening blow getting the wicket of Powell.
West Indies were dealt the 2nd blow as Kyle Hope
was run out by Stuart Broad. Shai Hope came to the crease and looked positive right
from word go. At lunch, the visitors reached 86 for 2.
After the lunch break, Kraigg Braithwaite reached his fifty
off 98 balls. Shai Hope made the batting look easy and too completed half-century
off 70 balls. Both West Indies batsmen complemented each other with stroke-play life tough for the hosts. Before the tea break, Kraigg Braithwaite was dismissed
for a well-made 95. Braithwaite and Hope put on 144 runs for the 3rd
wicket. West Indies reached 199 for 3.
Needing another 123 runs to win in the final session, Hope
and Chase put up another important partnership putting the England bowlers
under pressure. Woakes dismissed Roston Chase but Hope continued his positive
stroke play. Blackwood also came to the crease and hit a quickfire 41 off 45
balls.
Shai Hope impressed
with his technique and completed his maiden Test century off 175 balls. England
decided to take the 2nd new ball, but it was an amazing display of
batting by the West Indies batsmen. Shai Hope hit the winning runs and helped the
visitors chase down this target with 5 wickets to go.
West Indies was given no chance to chase down this target
but Shai Hope, Kraigg Braithwaite, Chase, and Blackwood brilliance resulted in a great
win. The visitors registered their first win on England soil since 2000.
With this win, West Indies leveled the series at 1-1. For
his twin centuries in the match, Shai Hope was named the man of the match.
West Indies 427 in 127 overs ( Shai Hope 147, Kraigg Braithwaite
134, Blackwood 49, James Anderson 5/76) and 322 for 5 in 91.2 overs ( Shai Hope
118*, Kraigg Braithwaite 95, Moeen Ali 2/76) beat England 258 in 70.5 overs (
Stokes 100, Root 59, Shannon Gabriel 4/51, Roach 4/71) and 490 for 8 in 141
overs ( Moeen Ali 84, Root 72, Woakes 61*, Chase 3/86) by 5 wickets.
