Australia women beat NZ to win the series
The Australian women’s team proved too strong as they
defeated New Zealand in the 2nd T20I played at Allan Border Field,
Brisbane on Sunday.
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine won the toss and decided
to bat first. Sophie Devine and Maddy Green began off steadily with positive
strokes in the first two overs. The left-arm spinner Molineux bought into the
attack struck by getting rid of Sophie Devine with a simple return catch to the
bowler. Trying to steal a third run, Maddy Green was run out by a brilliant throw
by Wareham and gather by Healy leaving New Zealand in trouble at 19 for 2.
Suzie Bates struggled to time the ball while Amy Satterthwaite
looked in decent touch putting pressure on Australian spinners. At the end of
six overs, New Zealand women scored 36 for 2. After the power play overs, both White
Ferns batters kept on ticking the scoreboard and hitting boundaries. Wareham struck
for Australia as Satterthwaite was brilliantly stumped by Healy. The third
umpire took lots of time before giving Satterthwaite out. Bates and
Satterthwaite added 49 runs for the 3rd wicket.
The Australian bowlers kept taking wickets at regular
intervals and never allowed White Ferns batters to score runs easily. Wareham
and Molineux did most of the damage. Nicola Carey produced brilliant catches dismissing
Kerr and Tahuhu. Carey took Rosemary wicket to bowl out New Zealand women for
129 in 19.2 overs.
Chasing 130 runs to win, Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy gave a
cracking start putting enough pressure on the White Ferns bowlers. Healy
smashed 22 runs off Suzie Bates that made life tough for the visitors. Tahuhu
struck as Healy wanted to hit a big shot again but went into the hands of Suzie
Bates. The Australian openers added 51 runs in just 4.3 overs.
Amelia Kerr was bought into the attack, but it was a little
too late. At the end of six overs, Australian women raced to 60 for 1. Kerr got
his first wicket off the innings to dismiss Beth Mooney trying clear the boundary
and gave a simple catch to Satterthwaite at mid-off. Australian captain Meg
Lanning and Racheal Haynes made sure that the hosts do not panic and reach the
target with ease.
Lanning and Haynes played according to the situation putting
on an unbeaten 65 runs stand for the 3rd wicket. It was commanding
for the Australian women as they won the match by 8 wickets with 20 balls.
By the virtue of this win, Australian women won the 3 match
T20I series. For his economical spell of 2 for 17, Molineux was awarded the
player of the match. The third and final match will be played at the same ground on 30th September.
Australian women 129 for 2 in 16.4 overs ( Haynes 40*, Healy
33, Kerr 1/19) beat New Zealand women 128 in 19.2 overs ( Satterthwaite 30,
Bates 22, Kimmince 3/21, Molineux 2/17) by 8 wickets.
