IPL Match 4: Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings in a high scoring thriller
Rajasthan Royals started their IPL campaign with an impressive win over Chennai Super Kings in a high scoring thriller played at
Sharjah Cricket Ground, Sharjah on Tuesday.
Chennai Super Kings captain won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as Deepak Chahar got rid of the youngster
Yashaswi Jaiswal trying to pull giving a simple return catch to himself. Sanju
Samson faced his first ball of the innings in the 4th over. His
first scoring shot was a six off Sam Curran’s bowling. RR captain Steve Smith
played with intent putting pressure on the CSK bowlers. At the end of the first six
overs, Rajasthan Royals scored 54 for 1.
Sanju Samson just teed off as Ravindra Jadeja was bought
into the attack by MS Dhoni. Piyush Chawla was belted for 28 runs in his first
over. During his over, Samson completed fifty off 18 balls. Chennai Super Kings
decided to take the strategic timeout. MS Dhoni decided to not take a review
that was hitting the leg stump. Samson and Smith smashed 19 runs off Piyush
Chawla in his 2nd over. Lungi Ngidi finally got the breakthrough for
Chennai Super Kings dismissing well-set Samson for a cracking 74 off 32 balls.
Samson and Smith added 121 runs laying a strong foundation.
In the same over, David Miller was run out without facing a
delivery as a brilliant throw by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kedar Jadhav broke the
wicket with his hand before collecting the ball. Steve Smith reached his
fifty off 35 balls with a dropped catch by Sam Curran. Rajasthan Royals took 2nd
strategic timeout. After the break, Piyush Chawla got rid of Robin Uthappa.
CSK bowlers made a strong comeback by taking wickets of
Tewtia, well-set Smith. There was another controversy as Tom Curran was given
out by the umpire as hit the pad and went to MS Dhoni. Dhoni claimed a catch.
The square leg umpire called for the third umpire and it was given not out. Jofra
Archer hit 4 sixes in the final over including 2 no-balls helping Rajasthan
Royals post 216 for 7 in 20 overs.
Chasing 217 runs to win, Shane Watson and Murali Vijay began
quietly. After the initial spell by Archer and Unadkat, Shreyas Gopal was
bought into the attack. Shane Watson put pressure on Tom Curran with big shots.
At the end of six overs, CSK scored 53 for 0.
Soon after the power play overs, Rahul Tewtia got the big
wicket of Shane Watson with a good delivery to break 56 runs opening stand.
Soon after Gopal struck to dismiss Murali Vijay to leave CSK under pressure.
Sam Curran promoted at number 4 played some lovely shots before Tewaita got him
trying to hit another big shot. With that wicket, there was a second strategic
timeout. It was curtains for Ruturaj Gaikwad stumped off his first ball to
leave CSK in big trouble at 77 for 4.
It was a very tough ask for CSK as the run-rate was climbing.
Kedar Jadhav looked in decent touch but Faf du Plessis struggled for timing. After
the 2nd timeout, Tom Curran dismissed Jadhav with a lovely catch by
Samson. MS Dhoni came to the crease and struggled initially. Faf du Plessis
took the smashed Unadkat for 21 runs in the 17th over. During this
over, he completed his fifty off 29 balls.
Faf du Plessis was finally dismissed for a superb 72 off 37
balls by Archer. MS Dhoni hit 3 successive sixes off Tom Curran but fell short
of the target by 16 runs. Dhoni and Faf added 65 runs for the 6th
wicket.
Rajasthan Royals 216 for 7 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 74,
Steve Smith 69, Sam Curran 3/33) beat Chennai Super Kings 200 for 6 in 20 overs
( Faf du Plessis 72, Watson 33, Dhoni 29*, Rahul Tewaita 3/37) by 16 runs.
For his breathtaking 74 off 32 balls with 1 four and 9
sixes, Sanju Samson was awarded the man of the match award. Kolkata Knight
Riders will take on Mumbai Indians tomorrow at Abu Dhabi.
