IPL Match 7: Delhi Capitals cruise to a comfortable win over CSK

Delhi Capitals registered an emphatic win over Chennai Super Kings in the 7th match of the tournament played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Friday.

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to field first. It could have been an ideal start for CSK as nobody appealed as the replay showed that it hit the inside edge of the bat. Josh Hazlewood playing his first match spiled a tough chance on his own bowling. Prithvi Shaw played with intent but Shikhar Dhawan struggled with his timing. At the end of six overs, Delhi Capitals scored 36 for 0.

Prithvi Shaw put the pressure on Piyush Chawla right from word go. After struggling initially, Dhawan made good use by smashing Ravindra Jadeja for boundaries. Delhi Capitals openers kept the scoreboard ticking and put enough pressure on CSK bowlers. There was something in eyes of Shaw and the umpires took the first strategic timeout. After the break, Dhawan and Shaw made the batting look easy.

Piyush Chawla made an important breakthrough for CSK as Dhawan tried to hit a reverse sweep but was found plumb. Delhi Capitals openers put on 94 in 10.4 overs. Shaw looked impressive and reached his fifty off 35 balls. Rishabh Pant promoted at number 3 came to terms with the pitch. Shaw’s innings came to end as he came down the track and was stumped by MS Dhoni.

CSK bowlers made a strong comeback in the final few overs. Iyer and Pant looked in decent touch hitting lovely boundaries. Sam Curran bowled a brilliant 19th over giving away just 4 runs and taking the wicket of Iyer with a lovely diving catch by MS Dhoni. Iyer and Pant added 58 runs for the 3rd wicket. Delhi Capitals posted 175 for 3 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 176 runs to win, Shane Watson and Murali Vijay struggled with their timing. Prithvi Shaw dropped a simple catch of Watson. Axar Patel struck by getting rid of Watson with a good catch by Hetymer at deep midwicket. Murali Vijay did not look at ease and was dismissed trying to hit a big shot. At the end of six overs, CSK scored 34 for 2.

Ruturaj Gaikwad coming at number 4 could not time the ball. At the end of the first timeout, CSK made just 44 for 2. Gaikwad was run out as there a mix up between him and Faf du Plessis. Delhi Capitals fielding was not up to the mark as Hetymer dropped two chances. Faf du Plessis looked in decent touch but struggled with the climbing run rate. Axar Patel and Amit Mishra did not give runs putting enough pressure on CSK batsmen.

Delhi Capitals cruise to a comfortable win as Rabada dismissed Dhoni and Jadeja in the final over. It was a commanding performance by the young DC captain who just did not allow CSK batsmen to score runs easily.

With this win, DC has moved up to the top of the points table. For his 64 off 43 balls, Prithvi Shaw was named the man of the match award.

Delhi Capitals 175 for 3 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 64, Pant 37*, Chawla 2/33) beat Chennai Super Kings 131 for 7 in 20 overs (du Plessis 43, Kedar Jadhav 26, Rabada 3/26, Nortje 2/21) by 44 runs.
