This Day That Year: India lift the Asia Cup for 7th time
Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian Cricket
Team defeated Bangladesh in a thrilling final played at Dubai International
Stadium, Dubai on 28th September 2018.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to
field first. The Bangladeshi openers Liton Das looked in fine form hitting
boundaries putting pressure on Indian bowlers. At the end of 10 overs,
Bangladesh raced away to 65 for 0.
After the restrictions, Das made the batting look easy and
kept on piling runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz came to open the innings along with Das
gave him good support. Das completed his fifty off just 33 balls laying a
strong foundation for a massive total. The part-time spinner Kedar Jadhav got the
breakthrough for India ending 120 runs for the opening wicket. India made a strong
comeback into the game by taking wickets of Imrul Kayes, Rahim, and then a
brilliant combination run by Jadeja, and Chahal reduced Bangladesh to 139 for 4.
India kept on taking wickets at regular intervals. On the other hand, Das
completed his century off 87 balls. It was a great comeback by Indian bowlers
to bowl out Bangladesh for 222 in 48.3 overs.
Chasing 223 runs to win, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma
gave an aggressive start putting on 35 runs in 4.4 overs. Dhawan was dismissed
by Naizmul Islam trying to clear the infield. Ambati Rayudu also failed to
contribute to leave India in some trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs, India
scored 57 for 2.
Rohit Sharma looked in great touch taking on the Bangladesh
spinners. After the start, Rohit struggled for timing and was dismissed by
Rubel Hossain. Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni steadied the innings taking singles
and hitting boundaries. The things looked in control but Karthik fell to Mahmudullah.
Karthik and MS Dhoni added 54 runs for the 4th wicket.
Kedar Jadhav came to the crease and hit some lovely shots.
MS Dhoni was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman leaving India in trouble at 160 for
5. Jadhav had to retired hurt because of an injury. Ravindra Jadeja and
Bhuvneshwar Kumar played important knocks putting on 45 runs for the 6th
wicket. Jadeja and Kumar went in quick succession to make the match interesting.
With 6 runs required off 6 balls, the match went right down
the wire as Kedar Jadhav hit the winning runs along with Kuldeep Yadav to help
Team India win the Asia Cup by 3 wickets. It was an amazing performance by the
Men in Blue who remained unbeaten in the entire tournament.
For his brilliant knock of 121 off 117 balls, Liton Das was
awarded the man of the match award. Shikhar Dhawan was named the man of the series
award for his consistent performance. By virtue of this win, India lifted the
Asia Cup for record 7th time since its inception from 1984.
India 223 for 7 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 48, Karthik 37, Rubel Hossain 2/26, Mustafizur Rahman 2/38) beat Bangladesh 222 in 48.3 overs ( Liton Das 121, Soumya Sarkar 33, Kuldeep Yadav 3/45, Kedar Jadhav 2/41) by 3 wickets.
