This Day That Year: Indian legend created major record
It was a historic night for cricketing fans as Yuvraj Singh became
the first batsman in T20Is to hit six sixes in international cricket. He achieved
this remarkable feat during an important Super 8 match of the ICC World T20
against England played at Kingsmead, Durban on 19th September 2007.
Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat
first. The decision paid off as Sehwag and Gambhir laid a strong foundation
putting on 136 runs in 14.4 overs. Sehwag was dismissed for superb 68 off 52
balls while Gambhir scored 58 off 41 balls.
Robin Uthappa fell cheaply in the 17th over.
Yuvraj Singh came to the crease and put the England bowlers under immense pressure
right from word go. He teed off hitting Stuart Broad for six sixes in the 19th
over. He was in some mood that night. After smashing four big hits, Yuvraj hit
going down the knee going into the hands of a jam-packed crowd. He then swung the
bat and went high into the night sky for a massive six. With this hit, he also
registered the fastest fifty in T20Is format.
Yuvraj Singh was finally dismissed for a sensational 58 off
14 balls including 7 sixes and 3 fours with an amazing strike rate of 362.50. His
knock helped India post a massive total of 218 for 4 in 20 overs.
The England batsmen tried their best to achieve this target,
but the target was too steep. The Indian team won the match by 18 runs. For his
brilliance, Yuvraj Singh was named the man of the match award.
India needed to win this match as they lost their first Super
8 match against New Zealand. Yuvraj Singh reached his fifty off just 12 balls
and helped team India to propel for a massive total. He holds the record of the fastest half-century in T20I format to date. Singh showed his class and kept
on piling runs against a strong England unit.
