This Day That Year: MS Dhoni led side qualified for the finals
The young Indian Team proved everybody wrong as they
defeated a strong Australian squad in the 2nd semi-finals of the World
T20 played at Kingsmead, Durban on 22nd September 2007.
Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat
first. Virender Sehwag and Gambhir started off cautiously before Mitchell Johnson
got the wicket of Sehwag. Gambhir who looked good was dismissed by Johnson
leaving India in trouble at 41 for 2.
Yuvraj Singh came to the crease and took the attack to
Australian bowling. He was severe with his stroke play keeping on good form
that he displayed in the tournament. On the other, Robin Uthappa gave most of
the strike to Yuvraj. The left-handed southpaw just looked in great touch and
reached his fifty off just 20 balls.
It was an amazing knock by Yuvraj Singh who kept on hitting
big strokes against a top-quality bowling line up. Andrew Symonds ran out Robin
Uthappa to end superb 84 runs stand for the 3rd wicket. Yuvraj Singh
was dismissed for a brilliant 70 off 30 balls. The Indian captain led from the
front as he scored a quickfire 36 off 18 balls to help Team India post 188 for
5 in 20 overs.
Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden began off to a steady
start before Sreesanth bowled a beauty to dismiss Gilchrist. Hayden looked in
great touch hitting the ball decently making life tough for Indian bowlers. He and
Andrew Symonds put enough pressure on Indian bowlers with positive stroke play.
Hayden was simply sensational with his timing and reached his fifty off 40
balls.
Sreesanth got the much-needed breakthrough for India
dismissing well-set Hayden for 62. Hayden and Symonds added 66 runs for the 3rd
wicket. The Indian bowlers kept their nerve and took wickets at regular
intervals to restrict Australia for 173 for 7. India won the match by 15 runs
to qualify for the finals against arch-rivals Pakistan.
For his cracking knock, Yuvraj Singh was named the man of
the match award.
India 188 for 5 in 20 overs ( Yuvraj Singh 70, MS Dhoni 36, Johnson
2/31) beat Australia 173 for 7 in 20 overs ( Matthew Hayden 62, Symonds 43,
Sreesanth 2/12, Joginder Sharma 2/37) by 15 runs.
