IPL Match 35: Kolkata Knight Riders registered a thrilling win in Super Over

 

Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in a thrilling match played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner won the toss and decided to field first. It could have been ideal for SRH as Rashid Khan dropped a sitter off Shubman Gill in the 2nd over. After the initial struggle, Rahul Tripathi and Shubman Gill played with positive intent putting pressure on SRH bowlers. T Natarajan was bought into the attack by Warner and looked impressive with his line and lengths.

Natarajan bowled a good delivery to Rahul Tripathi that hit the elbow. After taking treatment, Tripathi played rash stroke hitting the off stumps to give SRH breakthrough. At the end of the first six overs, Kolkata Knight Riders made 48 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Vijay Shankar was bought into the attack and did a superb job. Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana were not able to time the ball. Warner decided to bring in Rashid Khan into the attack. At the end of the first timeout, KKR made 64 for 1.

Nitish Rana took the attack to Rashid Khan with big strokes while Gill continued to struggle. A superb running catch by Priyam Garg ended the innings for Shubman Gill. Gill and Rana added 39 runs for the 2nd wicket. SRH struck again the very next over as Vijay Shankar dismissed Rana with another superb catch by Garg. Andre Russell's poor form in this season continued trying to hit a boundary giving a simple catch to Vijay Shankar at deep midwicket. At the end of the second timeout, KKR scored 111 for 4.

Dinesh Karthik came to the crease and looked positive right from word go making life tough for SRH bowlers. The experienced duo of Karthik and Morgan played cameos knock as they added 58 runs in the last 5 overs. Basil Thampi dismissed Morgan off the last ball with a good catch by Manish Pandey at long-off. Kolkata Knight Riders posted 163 for 5 at end of 20 overs.

Chasing 164 runs to win, Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow came to open the innings for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Williamson who was struggling with running looked in cracking touch along with Bairstow with positive stroke play and put KKR bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, SRH made 58 for 0. With that, the first timeout was called.

Soon after the field restrictions, Lockie Ferguson playing his first match of the tournament struck for KKR dismissing dangerous Williamson. SRH openers put on 58 runs. Priyam Garg who was promoted to number 3 in the batting order was bowled by Ferguson. In the next over, Chakravarthy got rid of Bairstow to put SRH under pressure. Ferguson struck again for KKR dismissing Manish Pandey leaving SRH at 82 for 4. David Warner coming at number 4 looked in decent touch putting pressure on KKR bowlers.

Pat Cummins struck for KKR getting the wicket of Vijay Shankar to leave SRH at 109 for 5. With that, the second timeout was called. David Warner and Abdul Samad steadied the ship with positive stroke play keeping the SRH hopes alive. The situation looked good for SRH with Samad and Warner playing with intent putting on 37 runs for the 6th wicket.

With 18 runs required off 6 balls, Warner hit 3 successive boundaries to make the equation in favor of SRH. The match went down right down the wire as Russell gave just 1 and allowed it to go Super Over.

In the Super Over, Ferguson dismissed David Warner and then Abdul Samad as KKR gave just 2 runs. With 3 runs required to win, Dinesh Karthik and Morgan finished the job to help Eoin Morgan led side earn 2 vital points.

For his superb bowling effort, Ferguson was named the man of the award.

KKR 163 for 5 in 20 overs ( Shubman Gill 36, Dinesh Karthik 29*, T Natarajan 2/40) and 3 for 0 in 0.4 overs ( Eoin Morgan 1*, Dinesh Karthik 0*) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 163 for 6 in 20 overs ( Warner 47*, Bairstow 36, Ferguson 3/15, Varun Chakravarthy 1/32) and 2 for 2 in 0.3 overs ( Samad 2, Ferguson 2/2) in Super Over
