IPL Match 36: Kings XI Punjab beat Mumbai Indians in a cliff-hanger

 

In one of the best games, Kings XI Punjab defeated Mumbai Indians in a cliff-hanger to stay alive in the tournament played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first. Quinton de Kock looked in cracking form with positive strokes while Rohit Sharma hit 2 lovely boundaries. Arshdeep Singh provided the breakthrough for KXIP dismissing MI captain Rohit with a beauty. Mohammed struck in the next over to get rid of inform Surya Kumar Yadav with a rebound catch by M Ashwin.

The pitch had a sharp turn and KXIP bowlers utilized well. Arshdeep Singh struck to get rid of Ishan Kishan top-edging as M Ashwin took a simple catch to leave Mumbai Indians in trouble at 38 for 3. At the end of the first six overs, MI made 43 for 3.

Krunal Pandya and Quinton de Kock steadied the ship for Mumbai Indians taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. At the end of the first timeout, MI made 60 for 3. With things looking good for MI, Ravi Bishnoi provided a breakthrough dismissing Krunal Pandya. Krunal and de Kock added 58 runs for the 4th wicket. With that wicket, the second timeout was called.

Hardik Pandya got off the mark with a six while de Kock impressed with his stroke play and completed his half-century off 39 balls. Mohammed Shami struck for KXIP dismissing Hardik Pandya with an easy catch by Nicolas Pooran. Chris Jordan got rid of dangerous de Kock to leave Mumbai Indians in trouble.

Kieron Pollard and Nathan Coulter Nile smashed the Kings XI Punjab bowlers in the death overs. Both put on unbeaten 57 runs off 21 balls to help Mumbai Indians post 177 for 6 in 20 overs. Pollard   remained not out on 34 off 12 balls while Nathan Coulter Nile hit 24 off 12 balls.

Chasing 178 runs to win, KL Rahul continued his superb form hitting Trent Boult for runs. Jasprit Bumrah got the breakthrough dismissing the dangerous Mayank Agarwal hitting inside edge onto the pad and clipping bails. Kings XI Punjab openers put on 33 runs in 3.3 overs.

Chris Gayle came to the crease and played with positive intent. On the other hand, KL Rahul showed his class taking on MI bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Kings XI Punjab made 51 for 1. With that, the first timeout was called.

After the timeout, KL Rahul and Gayle looked in decent touch before Chahar got the breakthrough dismissing dangerous Gayle. Rahul and Gayle added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. Nicolas Pooran blasted away Mumbai Indians bowling with massive strokes. Rahul completed his fifty off 35 balls. Bumrah was bought into the attack to dismiss dangerous Pooran. Rohit Sharma set attacking fields that resulted in Maxwell’s wicket leaving KXIP at 115 for 4.

KL Rahul showed his class and kept Kings XI Punjab ahead along with Deepak Hooda. Jasprit Bumrah produced a brilliant yorker to dismiss well-set KL Rahul for a superb 77. Rahul and Hooda added 38 runs for the 5th wicket.

Rahul Chahar dropped a simple chance to dismiss Deepak Hooda. With 9 runs required off the last 6 balls, Chris Jordan got lucky inside edge boundary-making equation in favor of Kings XI Punjab. The match went down the last ball as Jordan could not cross the crease and was run out making it Super Over.

Batting first, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a stunning over giving away just 5 runs. He took the wicket of Nicolas Pooran and then produced a superb yorker to dismiss KL Rahul. Mohammed Shami allowed Kings XI Punjab in to the game with brilliant yorkers against de Kock and Rohit Sharma. With 2 runs required off 1 ball, a superb throw by Nicolas Pooran and run out by KL Rahul resulted in the 2nd over Super Over.

In the Second Super Over, Chris Jordan bowled a decent over giving away just 11 runs and run out of Hardik Pandya.  Mayank Agarwal produced a brilliant save at the boundary. Chasing 12 runs to win, Chris Gayle smashed six of the very first ball while Mayank Agarwal hit 2 boundaries off Trent Boult bowling to help Kings XI Punjab a great win.

This is the first time that an IPL match has been decided in 2 Super Overs during the same match. For his captains knock KL Rahul was named the man of the match award.

Kings XI Punjab 176 for 6 in 20 overs ( KL Rahul 77, Bumrah 3/24) 15 for 0 in 0.4 overs ( Mayank Agarwal 8*, Gayle 7*) beat Mumbai Indians 176 for 6 in 20 overs ( de Kock 53, Pollard 34, Mohammed Shami 2/30, Arshdeep Singh 2/35) and 11 for 1 in 1 overs ( Pollard 8*, Jordan 0/11) in Super Over.
