IPL Match 38: Kings XI Punjab beat Delhi Capitals to stay alive in the tournament
Kings XI Punjab register a comprehensive win over table
toppers Delhi Capitals in the 38th match of IPL 2020 played at Dubai
International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday.
Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided
to bat first. Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan began off steadily with positive
stroke play putting pressure on Kings XI bowlers. James Neesham coming into the
playing XI today got the breakthrough dismissing Shaw who top-edged giving a
simple catch to Maxwell at extra cover. Iyer began his innings with a lovely
six.
Shikhar Dhawan looked in cracking touch and put Kings XI
Punjab bowlers under pressure. At the end of the first six overs, Delhi
Capitals made 53 for 1. With that, the first timeout was called. Dhawan
completed his fifty off just 28 balls. Dhawan and Iyer kept the scoreboard. M
Ashwin struck for Punjab dismissing DC captain Iyer with a lovely catch by KL
Rahul. Dhawan and Iyer put on 48 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Rishabh Pant struggled to time the ball and looked out of
sorts. Dhawan made the batting look easy and kept the scoreboard ticking. At the
end of the second timeout, DC scored 103 for 2. Soon after the timeout, Maxwell
provided the breakthrough for Kings XI Punjab dismissing Pant with a simple
catch by Agarwal at long-on. Kings XI Punjab bowlers kept a tight leash on DC
batting. Mohammed Shami struck for Punjab getting rid of dangerous Marcus
Stoinis with a running catch by Agarwal. Stoinis made 9 runs off 10 balls.
Shikhar Dhawan completed his 2nd successive
century off 57 balls but Kings XI Punjab bowlers kept a tight lid on other DC
batsmen. Mohammed Shami bowled a stunning final over and dismissed Hetymer with
a superb yorker of the final ball. Delhi Capitals posted 164 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 165 runs to win, KL Rahul made a good start with 3
lovely boundaries. Axar Patel coming into the attack got rid of Kings XI Punjab
captain hitting inside half of the bat and going into the hands of Daniel Sams.
Chris Gayle tore into Tushar Deshpande smacking him for 26
runs putting Delhi Capitals on the backfoot. In the next over, R Ashwin
dismissed the dangerous Gayle with a beauty of a delivery. Mayank Agarwal was
run out in a big mix-up with Nicolas Pooran. At the end of the first six overs,
Kings XI Punjab made 57 for 3.
After the field restrictions, it could have been a disaster
for Punjab, but Pant missed a golden opportunity to run out Maxwell. Pooran
took the attack to Tushar Deshpande putting the pressure back on Delhi Capitals
bowlers while Maxwell gave him strike. At the end of the first timeout, Kings
XI Punjab made 87 for 3.
Pooran continued his fortune with big hits and making the
equation easy for Kings XI Punjab. Delhi Capitals missed another chance to get
rid of Maxwell via run out. It was an amazing knock by Pooran who reached his
fifty off just 27 balls.
Kagiso Rabada was bought into the attack and dismissed the
dangerous Pooran. Maxwell and Pooran added 69 runs for the 4th
wicket. At the end of the second timeout, Kings XI Punjab made 137 for 4.
A superb catch by Rishabh Pant ended the innings for Maxwell.
Delhi Capitals fielding was not up to the mark as Marcus Stoinis dropped a simple
chance to dismiss Neesham. The situation became tight for Kings XI Punjab.
Neesham hit the winning runs with a six to help Kings XI Punjab register 5
wickets win.
Kings XI Punjab 167 for 5 in 19 overs ( Pooran 53, Maxwell
32, Rabada 2/27) beat Delhi Capitals 164 for 5 in 20 overs ( Dhawan 106*,
Mohammed Shami 2/28) by five wickets.
For his 106*, Shikhar Dhawan was named the man of the match
award. Kings XI Punjab moved to 5th in the points table.
