IPL Match 46: Clinical Kings XI Punjab stay alive in the tournament with an easy win
Kings XI Punjab produced a dominating performance as they
defeated Kolkata Knight Riders easily in the 46th match of IPL 2020
played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Monday.
Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as Glenn Maxwell got rid of Nitish Rana
getting a top edge to Gayle at short fine leg. Mohammed Shami struck twice in the
2nd over dismissing Rahul Tripathi and Dinesh Karthik to leave KKR
in trouble at 10 for 3. Dinesh Karthik was given out by the umpire and the decision remained out.
Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan counter-attacked with positive
strokes putting pressure on the KXIP bowlers. At the end of the first six
overs, KKR made 54 for 3. It was an amazing batting display by Morgan and Gill
who kept on ticking the scoreboard. At the end of the first timeout, KKR scored
66 for 3.
As things looked good for KKR, Ravi Bishnoi provided the
breakthrough dismissing dangerous Morgan giving a catch to M Ashwin at deep
square leg. Morgan and Gill added 81 runs for the 4th wicket. Kings
XI Punjab bowlers made a strong comeback into the match as Chris Jordan got rid
of inform Sunil Narine. At the end of the second timeout, KKR made 107 for 5.
Kamlesh Nagarkoti was promoted ahead of Cummins as Ravi
Bishnoi troubled him with his variations. Ashwin dismissed Nagarkoti and put
KKR in trouble. Bishnoi struck again to dismiss Pat Cummins with a beauty.
Shubman Gill looked composed to reach his fifty off 36 balls. Ferguson provided
a quick-fire knock remaining not out on 24 off 13 balls. Shami dismissed
well-set Shubman Gill giving a simple catch to Pooran at deep midwicket. KXIP
bowlers did a superb job to restrict KKR for a modest total of 149 for 9.
Chasing 150 runs to win, it was a cautious start by KL Rahul
and Mandeep Singh who played the fast bowlers well. At the end of the first six
overs, KXIP scored 36 for 0. Varun Chakravarthy got an important wicket of KL
Rahul with quick delivery. KXIP openers put on 47 runs in 8 overs.
With that wicket, the first timeout was called. Chris Gayle
blasted away Varun Chakravarthy to gain momentum for KXIP along with Mandeep
Singh. Gayle upped the ante with big strokes and put KKR bowlers under immense
pressure. On other hand, Mandeep Singh joined the party keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Mandeep completed his fifty off 49 balls while Gayle made the batting
look easy. At the end of the second
timeout, KXIP looked in a comfortable position at 123 for 1.
After the timeout, Gayle completed his fifty off 25 balls.
Ferguson dismissed Gayle with a slower delivery giving a simple catch to Prasidh
Krishna at short third man. Gayle and Mandeep added 100 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Nicolas Pooran hit the winning runs for Kings XI Punjab to register 8 wickets
win with 7 balls to spare.
For his knock of 51 from 29 balls, Chris Gayle was named the
man of the match award. With this win, KXIP moves up to number 4th
in the points table.
Kings XI Punjab 150 for 2 in 18.5 overs (Mandeep Singh 66*, Gayle 51, Varun Chakravarthy 1/34) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 149 for 9 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 57, Morgan 40, Shami 3/35, Bishnoi 2/20) by 8 wickets.
