Babar Azam- the backbone of Pakistan batting line-up
The captain of the Pakistani team for all three formats,
Babar Azam has been in sensational touch. He performed brilliantly for Pakistan
in the T20 format and led Karachi Kings to their maiden Pakistan Super League title.
In the concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe played at Rawalpindi,
Babar Azam made a match-winning knock of 82 from 55 balls leading Pakistan to a
comfortable 6 wickets win chasing 157 runs to win in the opening game played on 7th
November.
He continued his impressive form in the 2nd T20I
also. Chasing down a modest total of 135 runs to win, Babar played with positive
intent and scored a quickfire 51 off 28 balls with 8 boundaries and 1 six
leading Pakistan to an easy 8 wicket win to seal the series. In the final game
of the series, Babar dropped down himself giving the youngsters a chance.
Pakistan won that game also by 8 wickets.
After a 7-month gap, the Pakistan Super League returned with
the playoffs game remaining. Babar played under the captaincy of Imad Wasim for
Karachi Kings. Karachi bowled brilliantly in the first qualifier to restrict
Multan Sultans.
Chasing down 141 runs to win, Babar Azam looked in sublime
touch putting the Multan Sultans bowlers under pressure with his aggressive
strokes and made life tough for the opposition. With wickets falling at another end,
Babar looked composed to reach his fifty off 42 balls. After Babar’s wicket, the
match went into the Super Over. Karachi Kings held their nerves to reach their
maiden PSL finals.
In the finals played against Lahore Qalandars on 17th
November 2020 at National Stadium, Karachi, Babar Azam showed his class with
another brilliant knock. Chasing down 135 runs to win, Azam looked steady with intent
and hit the bad balls away for boundaries. It was a special knock under
pressure by Babar remaining not out on 63 off 49 balls guiding Karachi Kings to
their maiden PSL title.
Karachi Kings won the match by 5 wickets with 8 balls to spare.
Babar Azam had a superb PSL 5 season. For his match-winning knock, Babar Azam
was named the man of the match award. He emerged as the leading run-getter in
the tournament with 473 runs from 12 matches ( 11 innings) with 5 half-centuries
to his name.
With the New Zealand tour coming up, Babar Azam’s form
augurs well for Pakistan in T20I and test format. It will be a challenge for
Babar as a captain and as a batsman to step up against top-quality Kiwis
bowling line-up.
