IPL 2020 Finals: Mumbai Indians defeat Delhi Capitals to win their fifth title
Mumbai Indians registered a comfortable 5 wicket over Delhi
Capitals in the finals of IPL 2020 played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai
on Tuesday.
Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was not an ideal start for DC as last match hero Marcus
Stoinis was dismissed off the very 1st ball by Trent Boult. Shikhar
Dhawan looked steady with his strokes and put some pressure on Mumbai Indians
bowlers. Boult got rid of Ajiyanka Rahane with another good delivery to leave
Delhi Capitals in trouble at 16 for 2.
Jayant Yadav replacing Rahul Chahar dismissed Shikhar Dhawan
with a superb ball leaving Delhi Capitals in trouble at 22 for 3. DC captain
Shreyas Iyer and Pant counterattacked making life tough for MI. At the end of
the first six overs, Delhi Capitals made 41 for 3.
Iyer and Pant kept the scoreboard ticking taking singles and
hitting boundaries. At the end of the first timeout, Delhi Capitals made 59 for
3. After the timeout, Iyer, and Pant showed their class hitting boundaries to
keep the momentum going for Delhi Capitals. It was an impressive batting
display by both Pant and Iyer to revive DC innings from a tough situation.
Delhi Capitals ended the 2nd timeout at 99 for 3.
Pant came finally good to get his fifty off 35 balls. Nathan
Coulter Nile provided the breakthrough for Mumbai Indians dismissing dangerous
Pant with a simple catch to Hardik Pandya at fine leg. Pant and Iyer put on 96
runs for the 4th wicket. DC captain Iyer completed his fifty too off
40 balls. Mumbai Indians made a strong comeback in the death overs. Boult
dismissed Shimron Hetymer with a slower delivery providing simple catch to
Coulter Nile at short third.
In the last 3 overs, Mumbai Indians gave 20 runs restricting
Delhi Capitals to 156 for 7 in 20 overs. Despite Jasprit Bumrah not picking any
wickets, he bowled superbly with tight lines and lengths.
Chasing 157 runs to win, Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma
provided a flying start to the team putting pressure on their key bowlers
Rabada and Nortje. Marcus Stoinis dismissed de Kock with a simple catch to Pant.
Mumbai Indians openers put on 45 runs in 25 balls. Surya Kumar Yadav continued
his superb form making life tough for DC. At the end of the first six overs,
Mumbai Indians raced to 61 for 1 and ended the first timeout at 65 for 1.
Rohit Sharma looked in cracking touch putting the Delhi
Capitals bowlers under severe pressure. A miscommunication led to Surya Kumar
Yadav run out. Surya Kumar and Rohit Sharma added 45 runs for the 2nd
wicket. The asking rate was under control as Ishan Kishan and Rohit kept the
scoreboard ticking. At the end of the second timeout, Mumbai Indians made 116
for 2.
After the timeout, Ishan Kishan scored with ease and put the
Delhi Capitals under pressure. Iyer did not bowl his main bowlers Rabada and
Nortje to pick wickets. A sensational catch by Lalit Yadav at deep midwicket
ended the innings for Rohit Sharma.
Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya fell cheaply but could not
stop Mumbai Indians win the match by 5 wickets as Krunal Pandya hit the winning
runs.
Mumbai Indians 157 for 5 in 18.4 overs (Rohit Sharma 68,
Ishan Kishan 33*, Nortje 2/25) beat Delhi Capitals 156 for 7 in 20 overs (Iyer
65*, Pant 56, Boult 3/30, Coulter Nile 2/29) by 5 wickets.
For his figures of 3 for 30 in 4 overs, Trent Boult was
awarded the man of the match award.
