NZ versus WI 1st T20I: New Zealand beat West Indies in a high scoring thriller
The New Zealand cricket team started the home season with a comprehensive
win in the 1st T20I played at Eden Park, Auckland on Friday.
New Zealand captain Tim Southee won the toss and decided to
field first. After the first four balls of the match, rain arrived with the scoreboard reading 7 for 0. King and Fletcher smashed 18 runs from Kyle Jameson
over and rain took place again. Fletcher was superb with his approach putting pressure on Kiwis bowlers. Lockie Ferguson produced a yorker to get rid of
Fletcher made a quickfire 34 off 14 balls. West Indies openers added 58
runs in just 3.2 overs. Ferguson and Southee led Kiwis comeback by taking 5
wickets in quick time to reduce West Indies at 59 for 5. At the end of the first
six overs, West Indies scored 60 for 5.
Nicolas Pooran was given out by the umpire and decided to
review the decision, it was retained due to the umpire’s call. West Indies captain
Kieron Pollard looked in sublime touch putting the Kiwis bowlers under
pressure. With the scoreboard reading 96 for 5, rain arrived again. After the
rain delay, Pollard put the Kiwis bowlers under pressure with massive hits along
Fabien Allen. The match was reduced to 16 overs side after a rain delay.
Pollard completed his fifty off just 30 balls and made the
batting look easy on a good batting pitch. Allen hit some lusty blows creating
enough pressure. Ferguson got his fourth wicket dismissing Allen. Allen and
Pollard added 84 runs for the 6th wicket. Pollard made the batting
look easy and remained not out on 75 off 37 balls to help West Indies post 180
for 7 in 16 overs. Hamish Benett had to hobble off due to an injury.
Chasing the revised target of 176 runs to win, it was not an
ideal start for Kiwis as Martin Guptill was dismissed in the very first over by
Cottrell. The power play overs were reduced to 5 overs. Tim Siefert showed his class
taking on West Indies bowlers before being dismissed by Oshane Thomas. At the
end of the first five overs, New Zealand made 56 for 2.
Glenn Phillips smashed 22 runs off Fabien Allen’s over to
gain momentum. After smashing a quickfire, Phillips was dismissed by Thomas and
then Taylor was brilliantly run out by Allen to leave Kiwis in trouble at 63
for 4. Conway playing his debut match looked impressive with his stroke play
and kept on putting pressure on West Indies bowlers. James Neesham timed the ball
really well making life tough for the opposition.
Conway and Neesham kept on hitting runs at will making life easy for the hosts adding 77 runs for the 5th wicket. Mitchell
Santer impressed with his stroke play and just showed his class creating enough
pressure on West Indies bowlers. Neesham and Santer added unbeaten 39 runs for
the 6th wicket to help the hosts win the match by 5 wickets with 4
balls to spare.
West Indies 180 for 7 in 16 overs (Kieron Pollard 75*, Fletcher
34, Ferguson 5/21, Southee 2/22) beat New Zealand 179 for 5 in 15.2 overs ( Neesham
48*, Conway 41, Thomas 2/23) by 5 wickets via DLS method
For his figures of 5 for 21 in 4 overs, Ferguson was named
the man of the match award. New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead in the series. The 2nd match will take place at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on 29th November.
