This Day That Year: Indian batsmen made highest individual score in ODIs
History was created as the explosive Indian opener Rohit
Sharma registered the highest individual score by a batsman in ODI cricket. He achieved
this remarkable feat during the 4th ODI against Sri Lanka at iconic Eden
Gardens, Kolkata on 13th November 2014.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. Rohit Sharma was dropped by Shaminda Eranga at third man on 4. After
that, Rahane played with positive intent putting the Sri Lankan bowlers under
pressure. Soon after Rahane and Rayudu were dismissed in quick succession to
leave India in trouble at 59 for 2.
Rohit Sharma looked in fluent touch and made the batting
look easy. He showed his class and reached his fifty off 72 balls. It was a
superb batting display by Rohit who upped the ante keeping the scoreboard
ticking with a flurry of boundaries. He along with Kohli smashed the Lankan
bowlers all over the part making life tough for the visitors.
Rohit completed his century off 100 balls and created enough
pressure on the Lankan bowlers. The explosive Indian opener never looked back
making a mockery of lackluster bowling. In the next 25 balls, Rohit completed 150
to decimate the opposition. Kohli was finally dismissed for 66. Kohli and Rohit
added 202 runs for the 3rd wicket.
It was an expectational batting display by Rohit who
increased the tempo and reached his 2nd double century off 151 balls.
He smashed the spinners and pace bowlers all over the park making sure that
India reached a massive total. Suresh Raina and Robin Uthappa saw carnage from another end.
Rohit continued his aggressive display of batting and
reached his 250 off 166 balls. He was eventually dismissed for a record-breaking 264 off 177 balls including 33 fours and 9 sixes off the last ball. Thanks
to his record-breaking knock, India posted 404 for 5 in 50 overs. He surpassed
his own score of 209 and then Virender Sehwag 219.
The Indian team won the match easily as they bowled out Sri
Lanka for 251 giving a massive 153 runs win.
Since opening the innings for India since Champions Trophy
2013, Rohit Sharma has become one of the best batsmen in ODI format. He can decimate
the opposition with his attacking strokes and help India post massive totals.
India 404 for 5 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 264, Kohli 66,
Mathews 2/44) beat Sri Lanka 251 in 43.1 overs (Mathews 75, Thirimanne 69, Kulkarni
4/34) by 153 runs.
