This Day That Year: Indian bowler create record in T20I format
The right-arm medium pace bowler Deepak Chahar created a
huge record during the deciding T20I match against Bangladesh played at VCA
Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur on 10th November 2019.
Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and decided to
field first. It was an ideal start as Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply by
Shafiul Islam. Shikhar Dhawan looked in decent touch putting pressure on
Bangladeshi bowlers but could not convert into a big score. At the end of the
first six overs, India scored 41 for 2.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer revived the Indian innings with
positive strokes putting the Bangladeshi bowlers under pressure. Both batsmen
kept on ticking the scoreboard. Rahul completed his fifty off 33 balls. With
things looking good for India, Rahul was dismissed for a superb knock of 52.
Rahul and Iyer added 59 runs for the 3rd wicket. After the fall of
Rahul’s wicket, Iyer took the charge with big strokes to put Bangladesh bowling
under immense pressure.
Iyer completed his first fifty in T20I format off 27 balls
to keep the momentum going for India. Rishabh Pant failed to contribute
anything. Manish Pandey hit a quickfire knock off 22 from 13 balls to help
India post 174 for 5 in 20 overs.
Deepak Chahar provided a good start to the Indian team getting
rid of Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar in quick succession to leave Bangladesh at
12 for 2. Mohammad Mithun and Mohammad Naim showed their class by attacking
strokes to put India under pressure. At the end of the first six overs,
Bangladesh scored 33 for 2.
Naim and Mithun took the attack to Indian bowlers keeping
the scoreboard ticking. Naim playing his first T20I hit half-century off 34
balls. With the things looking glim for India, Rahul Chahar got rid of Mohammad
Mithun to break 98 runs stand for the 3rd wicket. The Indian bowlers
kept on taking wickets at regular intervals.
Chahar dismissed Shafiul Islam off the final ball in 18th
over. He then struck dismissing Mustafizur Rahman and Aminul Islam to pick up
hattrick to bowl out Bangladesh for 144 in 19.2 overs.
Deepak Chahar finished with figures of 6 wickets for 7 in
3.2 overs. He became the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in T20I format
and registered the best figures by a bowler in the shorter format.
Chahar broke Ajantha Mendis record for the best figures in
T20I match. For his match-winning spell, Deepak Chahar was awarded the man of
the match award and also the man of the man series.
India 174 for 5 in 20 overs ( Shreyas Iyer 62, KL Rahul 52,
Soumya Sarkar 2/29) beat Bangladesh 144 in 19.2 overs ( Mohammad Naim 81,
Deepak Chahar 6/7, Shivam Dube 3/30) by 30 runs.
